So, lets also say that this player is on the bench on a day where we play a team who is bottom of the league, or in the relegation "drop zone" what is the harm of giving up one bench spot to a player in our youth ranks? I don't think we would be "risking points" as Qaz put it, if we already had the game sewn up.
the thing is we wouldn't know whether the game would be sewn up at 70 mins when we are picking the squad- what if it's 0-0 and we've given joe cole's spot to someone else.
Gordon pretty much summed up my responce for me. Though I will add that the minute you take a win for granted against anybody in the premiership, your in trouble.

Didn't we almost get knocked out of the League Cup earlier this season by.......who was it?, Leicester City? (I remember Shevchenko scored a late winner).

mate, if you are 3-0 up in the 80th minute against sunderland, you mean you wouldn't put someone young on.

I know you could say, "well you can't pick the bench" for assuming you are going to be sewn up by then...but you can sure pick 4 other players who can help you out should the game be going the toher way

Scott

anyway- I've always said we should have 7 subs in england, and the 2 extra subs would be required to be home grown or players under a certain age.
Totally agree with this as it's probably the best way to give a number of youngsters minutes on the pitch during the season. Might help them develop a lot quicker too.

Teams generally need all 5 subs available these days, else you end up with a midfielder playing as a central defender when you have an injury.

By the way, I am going to be controversial here and say that I bet within 5 years time that Sinclair will have been sold from Chelsea to a smaller club.

Unless things change at Chelsea I wouldn't be surprised if you're right.

I don't think that a team need all subs btw. Five subs is 1 keeper, 1 defender, 1 midfielder, 1 striker, 1 extra.

That is if the team's got versatile players anyway.
