ANELKA DEAL VIRTUALLY DONE ...

When Roman arrived we were like kids in a sweet-shop.I don't want us paying over the odds full stop, but if we to have to lets do it for someone the manager has targeted, ala Drogba/Essien (who were instrumental in our recent sucess I must add) rather than throwing confetti around, like the signing of Sheva.

Just have a look at how much we've spent since Roman been here, it's not all been spent wisely, our re-couped as it should have been. Why lose money on Duff? Why let Diarra go for less tham £1m?
Just like i said B, you can't have it both. What does 'targeted' mean? Every player we buy has been targeted by us, otherwise we wouldn't be going for them. You keep bringing up Sheva but even if he was a surplus to the requirements it's still just one player.

I don't know what Diarra situation was but Duff was a shadow of a player he once was when we sold him to the Magpies and nothing since then convinced me it was the wrong move. I hope you're not suggesting we would ever be able to recover the money we had paid for him to Blackburn.

Again, i agree with you that we have made a lot of mistakes in the transfer market over the last few years, i just don't understand how do you expect us to turn things around if every time we target the player as you put it, we'd continue to pay over the odds.

bluenut, i need to take you up on a few things youve said. how many teams at the top actually make money on players? duff went because hes injury prone (as proven over the last year or so). the facts over the diarra transfer have never been cleared up. but, it looks like we got rid of a player with an inflated opinion of himself. and we actually made a profit i think. kezman - profit (pretty impressive considering how poor he was for us). crespo played pretty well for us but didnt settle. would you rather we had kept him here and had an unhappy player? parker didnt want to stay and fight for a place, so im not that upset about him leaving. didnt we make a profit on eidur?

We could start by not throwing money around like confetti.

Someone isn't doing their job right are they? Not sure who, but we always pay top dollar. Always. Arsenal who are above us in the league don't.

All I'm saying is we are constantly mugged off by other clubs when it comes to transfers. I wasn't suggesting that we could have re-coupped all the money we paid for Duff, but do you think it was a deal worthy of losing £12m on? Not necessarily the selling prices, but we shouldn't have been bidded up to £17m in the first place when we started at about 12m.

Just look at our out goings to the money coming in, the stats don't lie. We seem to pay over the odds everytime. We even paid Spurs £8m for a scout!

Roman has a big wad, it could be used more wisely is all I'm saying.

Anelka scores his first goal= wonder buy

Anelka falls over a le Sheva= waste of money, load of crap

Which will come first from the blues faithful?

For Avram sake let's hope it's the former and on saturday to boot

If 2 million is the difference between Pizarro starting up front against Spuds and Anelka starting then its an extra 2 million well spent in my opinion!!!

Welcome Anelka! Good signing, just what we need.

I agree if he helps secure 3 points against the spurs

money well spent

We keep going in circles. We both agree that we've spent loads of money in the past unwisely so why are you trying to convince me in something i'm quite aware of and support your opinion on, i don't know.

The point is what do we do to get things right and that's where i feel for a change we started going in the right direction by taking our time and weighing the options or at times, as in Alves case, telling the selling clubs to f..k off. Because of our early spending we're still viewed by agents and other clubs as the ultimate money machine every time we show interest in a player so the fees being thrown at us obviously include 'Chelsea premium' simply because they expect us to pay much more than any other team.

Arsenal are above us in the league for various reasons and our massive injury list is one of them. I do agree that they run the club better than us, but four and a half years ago we were on the verge of bankruptcy while they were one of the two top clubs in England.

We've done not too shabby since then.

This script has 'Chelsea new boy Anelka scores injury time winner against Sp*rs' written all over it!

HERE HERE BJD!

Now the deal has been done...

am I the only one who is luke warm about the whole thing?

I'm sure he will be a decent addition to the squad but I can't see him really setting the world alight.

I'm with you on this one as well, although I'm not sure why I am!

Anelka should be a brilliant, not too expensive, easy to bed in signing for us, he ticks all the boxes.

But this is almost into the "too good to be true" category.

Grant can't complain now about not having a striker for the Spurs game and hopefully my misgivings will prove totally without foundation and he will be fantastic from the get go.

Will we be able to play Anelka or has this deal gone through too late for him to be included in the squad for tomorrow?

I believe 17m was the amount that was required to trigger Duffer's release clause.

Moos, we still don't know for sure if he'll play tomorrow, but...

According to BBC report the deal was done in time for Anelka to play against Spuds.

We were always going to pay Boton's price as soon as Grant said he wanted him here for the Spuds game.

I'm far from luke warm. I'm very nearly excited about the transfer!

Anelka, is proven premiership quality and has scored goals throughout his career. He's a very intelligent player, (Intelligence is something that Grant has been harping on about recently) and he will fit straight into our team.

If he stays fit, i can see him scoring another 15-20 goals this season.

Let's hope it starts tomorrow.

Famous last words, i know, but i really cant see where this can go wrong.
