Ashley Cole to captain England tomorrow for his 100th cap

[bluedave]

I just saw this and thought it deserved a mention, although on further reading it seems he will lead the side out and Frank will take over captain's duties during the match.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22694215

Massive congratulations to him anyway, he joins quite an exclusive club along with the likes of Peter Shilton, David Beckham and *cough* Stevie Me. If he doesn't get suitably warm reception from the fans I'll be livid.

Ashley Cole, a true English, Chelsea legend.

[The Brit]

You'd think there would be congratulations wouldn't you...but cos ash refused to talk to the press per-match as is customary, it is a good enough excuse to go through his crime sheet and instead of talking about it as honouring country's best left back, the occasion has been used as another excuse to slag him off...disgraceful, but with our media can we be surprised...ESP. At the double standards as they led campaign for rio 'what drug test' to be recalled

[June]

To clarify the situation:

Ashley Cole will be the captain and wearing the armband during the match.

Frank Lampard only sit as a his representative during the press interview (nice helping hand to his mate who hates the british press).

[Jonty]

Greatest English left back ever, period.

[ForeverCarefree]

Not sure why he had to wait until game 102 to be given the honour but there you go.

Fair play to Ashley he didn't want to talk to the media who have made it their job to constantly try to tarnish his name wheeling out the same old stories about him all the time.

Not only has he won more than 100 caps he is also the first black Englishman to do so as well, not too shabby for a "choc ice" huh?

Argghh!  Yelled at the radio (radio 4) this morning when they questioned whether he was a good role model to captain England!  Yeah, like Ryan Giggs was when he captained GB last year.... but as he's the golden boy, who mentioned that.  Or Rio.  Or Wayne Bloody Rooney was mentioned as a possible captain.......

I hate the "role model" argument that gets wheeled out all the time. You put anyone's personal life under the microscope and you will find mistakes they have made.

As far as Ashley goes with regards to football he is very much a role model.

With regards to his behaviour off the field, he is still a lot better than many players who seem to be held in higher regard.

for once keys and gray on talksport are stepping up and giving it to a journo, highlighting the double standards and ludicrous nature of their ott stance on cole wearing armband for just one game

What was the journo saying for them to stick up for Cole?

[bluedave]

I honestly didn't realise he has been refusing to cooperate with the press c**ts, my respect for him is even greater for knowing that.

just repeating the crap in today's papers...they were just saying you the media are upset that he's not talking to you...should be honoured...raised double standard of how some sporting figures have done bad things and get support rather than abuse cole gets..

can listen to debate on here, starts about five minutes in of the 10.30-11am slot, if you want:

What do they expect really.... they are laughable sometimes

Well done Ash, looking forward to tonights game, do your talking on the pitch as usual

[Englishman]

The press are well out of step with this and have shown themselves to be petty and spiteful. All because someone they dislike, who doesn't talk to them and won a six figure libel judgement against one of Murdoch's papers for making up rubbish about him, is going to be England captain for his 100th cap. While Ash will never win a popularity contest, he seems to be widely respected as a player and most don't begrudge it to one of England's best full backs.

[Davey Baby]

You want to be a football journalist ..

1. Slag off Ashley Cole as much as possible.

2. Slag him off for not speaking to you.

3. A column in the Daily Mail awaits.

[NoSeatingInTheShedInMyDay]

It;s great to see Ash accepting his cap and leading out the national team and greater still to see the smile he wore as he did so. The press - who seem to have forgotten the 66 caps Tony Adams, a recovering alcoholic, won after coming out of prison - can stick it where the sun doesn't shine. Why the hell should Ash make them money by giving them quotes when they've treated him so appallingly?

This is the man who Roy Hodgson describes as "charming" and "a delight" to work with... who am I to argue with that?

[Scooby Blue]

It was great to see Ash looking as proud as punch as he was interviewed after the game.

Shame that w**ker Neil Ashton couldn't share the general feeling and instead decided to let his bitterness yet again rise to the surface.

The article is titled 'The whole crowd may have applauded him, but this was an honour Cole never deserved'

The following quote sums up Ashton's knowledge of the game and his inability to not see a glaring difference between the two players.

T

The idea that professional  footballers are role models — a point emphatically made in the Football Association’s judgment into Luis Suarez’s infamous bite on Branislav Ivanovic — was conveniently ignored by the decision to honour Cole in such a way on Wednesday night.

Yes because we all remember when Ashley Cole decided to bite someone on the pitch don't we?

This whole role model thing yet again. Yawn yawn yawn!

Ashton was obviously deeply hurt by the idea of Cole captaining England as he continued to spit bile throughout his excuse for an article.

At the end of the day, Ash has represented England over a 100 times and was given the opportunity to lead his country in what when all is said and done was nothing more than an end of season friendly. A great honour for him and no harm done so what's the deal with w**kers like Ashton.

[Tim W]

Couldn't believe what I was reading this morning, don't usually pay much attention to the Fail, but honestly Ashton really has some precarious issues, he seriously needs help. People showing that degree of delusional paranoia are normally kept in straight jackets and are force fed bottles of pills.

Ashton used to write for the NOTW, the paper Cole successfully sued for printing lies about him. Since then the tabloids have laid into Cole at every opportunity and then moan when he doesn't talk to them. That was the same paper, BTW, who were guilty of entrapping JT's dad for drug dealing and caught paying police officers for dirt on JT's mum. Good job journalists aren't seen as role models eh?

It also begs the question, why isn't Ashton campaigning for the half the current England team to be kicked out of the squad? It would take all day to list the indiscretions of Rooney and Gerrard alone. Furthermore, why was Ashton calling for Rio Ferdinand, the drug test missing, female steward kicking, choc ice calling serial philanderer who is also currently serving yet another driving ban, to be reinstated to the England team? Nothing but biased hypocrites who have a major axe to grind against this club and several of our players.
