Bursting with power and energy and launched against a backdrop of civil unrest, funk became a defiant celebration of African-American identity and a soundtrack for troubled times. James Brown's formula soon began to influence all manner of black artists.

Should be well worth a watch - just wait till they get to the 70s and show footage of the clubs in London - you will see Bluebeard and High Street Ken in the crowd 'livelying up themselves'

According to my TV Guide, there's an hour-long James Brown profile at 11:55 on BBC2, followed by The Electric Proms: James Brown Live, recorded at the Roundhouse. Must be different for Scotland.

That's far too late for me to be "livelying up" anything!

they had a show a good while back, maybe a couple of years, that talked about teh growth of black music from the roots in R&B into funk and into rap. was really good. Some good stuff about stevie wonder on there too. It was about a 6 part seriees an hour long each time...is this the same?

Yesd that was it Scott - James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, Stevie Wonder and Public Enemy were all covered with the main focus being on James Brown.

must've been a condensed version if they showed all that tonight. the one I saw was a ood few weeks long with about an hour devoted to each era of music. Good viewing nonetheless

That man was FUNKY! And it showed his influence on so many performers, most notably the little man Prince

Have you still got that George Clinton tape???? If so, any chance of doing me a copy? I only realised that programme was on when it was halfway through, was well pissed off!
