Biggest crowd you have ever been in at The Bridge?

Non Chelsea matches would be Soccer Aid at Old Trafford - my daughter and I were amongst a crowd of over 71,000 and then... and don't hate me too much for this guys... Crystal Palace's 2nd division title winning match against Burnley at Selhurst Park where my CPFC supporting cousins and I were part of a 51,000 plus crowd whilst several hundreds more watched from garage rooftops outside the ground.

The Chelsea crowds I've been part of are nothing spectacular, the highest probably being v Liverpool in 1981, with 41,412.

Ha Ha I was at that Palace match, the old man was a palace fan hence the irregular visits to the bridge until the mid eighties when i had my own cash. Got turfed out of the nets by the old bill when everyone invaded the pitch musdt have thought i was at Chelsea :-) Amazing how much more the grounds held back then. Was in the 55000 at the bridge v fulham and yet to look at there seemed about as many as the 42000 v southampton which was my first match at the bridge.

There were MANY matches that gave an attendance figure that was so obviously nowhere near the actual attendance..I WOULDNT suggest some sort of ...erm....errr.....

The Southampton Game was one of the biggest crushes that I ever experienced at the shed end, the forecourt was was rammed solid.

It was equally packed inside the ground.

Another was the Quarter final replay against Sheffield Wednesday this was one game that they shut the turnstiles and I was locked out. , a slight mist in the air, the floodlights and the sound of the crowd it was terrible being outside. Had a great match experience in the Black Bull though listening to the game.

I was at that game. Wasn't it Ossie's first return to the Bridge? I remember getting before 1.30 - probably the earliest I've ever been to a game. It was the first time I ever stood in The Shed.

42000+ a few games in the mid 80s against moan etc. Outside of Stamford bridge, Wembley against Middlesboro in the league cup 77000+.

What was the attendance against Palace in the cup game?
Evidently 54,407  according to internet search, so as far as I can remember Fulham game at 55,000 is the largest SB crowd I have been in.

  • Always thought the Palace game was 55,000 plus, I was in The Shed and it was bone crushing packed, saw a few people getting stretcherd out due to the crush,as a young 10 year old preety much went every home game from 1975 onwards for about 4years and all the London Derby's,The 4.2 Liverpool game was also packed but nothing to the extent of the Palace game though,Best Walk On The Shed had ever done though against the Reds.

Yes it was and everyone joined in with scarves held high. One of my greatest moments from my late teens as a Shedender.

It looked great from the North Stand too, quite a few of us had scarves and participated.  The one when we got it back to 2-2 against Palace was also impressive.

Got to the cup game against Palace at 2pm, gates shut everywhere. Tried getting over the railway line from the cemetery but the old bill had that one sussed.

Down one of the mews we saw Leonard Rossiter (Rigsby) hanging out his window!

Managed to see a bit of the game from one of the mansions on the Fulham Road. Could only see half the pitch but better than nothing.

Well sick when we lost.

Was in some big crowds in the seventies, I'm sure the figures were bent. The Fulham game was probably the biggest official crowd I was in. Good days.

Two that spring to mind for me were Spurs at home in the 6th round of the FA Cup, attendance 42,557. It was a rare all-ticket game. The Sunday before the game I remember queuing up for hours, the queue stretching all the way down the Fulham Road. This was 82. They beat us 3-2. We took the lead through Fillery but they had too much class for us. They had a fantastic side. Ardiles, Hoddle, Galvin etc. Fantastic shots of The Shed in this vid ..

I love that le coq sportif kit....one of the best we had

In 78 we were in Div one and played Liverpool again at the Bridge a few weeks later in tbe league. In fact we played them 4 times that season twice at home and twice away (one being in the league cup). I was at the 2 home games and the league game up there. We traveled from the station to the ground in a convoy of double decker buses and the bus in front of mine had a brick thrown through the window by a group of Liverpool fans in a side street. They soon legged it when all the buses stopped and our lot poured out in hot pursuit lol
