Pretty sure Fillery was a Mitcham boy, think Pates was from either Mitcham or Carshalton, but I'm not sure about Maybank.I forgot about Ray Lewington, him and my cousin were good mates and grew up in the same road in Clapham, played street football with Ray a few times back in the early 70s. Teddy Maybank was from Mitcham wasn't he Steve, along with Patesy and Fillery? Les Briley came from St Helier but never quite made it and ended up a bit of a legend at Millwall and I think Alex Stepney came from there as well.
BlueBeard, Ray Lewington (and I THINK Teddy Maybank too) used to go to my old primary school, apparently. They were both a few years older than me and played schoolboy football with my cousins. When those cousins realised that I was a Chelsea fan they got both players' autographs for me. Sadly the signatures, along with the (original, not photocopy!) sheet of paper sent to me by the club when I was ill with the First team's autographs - both the Wilkins lads, Harris, Bonetti, Walker (best winger of his time), Droy, Stanley, Langley et al - ruddy well went missing in a house move.MK Blue might remember this, but in the mid 70's a few of the younger Chelsea lads used to drink in the Morden Tavern after training. I remember seeing the likes of Teddy Maybank, Ian Britton and Ray Lewington in there and having a chat - the good old days, when players were mere mortals.
I feel your pain, I lost my entire football programme collection while moving house in the mid-80's - still get really pissed off when I think about it!BlueBeard, Ray Lewington (and I THINK Teddy Maybank too) used to go to my old primary school, apparently. Always rated Jon Harley. So much so went to a Notts County game with an old Chelsea shirt and asked him to sign it which he did. Quality player who enjoyed the game and played with a smile on his face. Perhaps that is why he got shifted out by Ranieri.Remember John Harley he was in the Garage pub in Southfields with his bird once.Good bloke had a bit of a chat with us but i think his bird felt a bit uncomfortable so he went.
Also see Bobby Stewart in the Dog and Fox in Wimbledon Village whilst he played for Everton. When he saw we noticed him he went to the other side of the pub, proberley thought he was gonna get a bit of stick. We did have Chelsea shirts on at the time.
If memory serves the one near Hampton Court was the Met Police sports grounds at Imber Court just over the river from Hampton Court.Like others, I used to go and watch them train in the 70s - I can't remember where they were when we first started going but I think it was Mitcham, and then in later years to somewhere near Hampton Court (my memory's bloody awful!) so met everybody in the mid to late seventies teams. But my claim to fame is that Kenny Swain gave us a lift home (well from the training ground to Kingston which was near enough to where we lived) - we found Butch's cardigan that he'd dropped and flagged down Kenny to give it to him to pass on and he offered us a lift! Lovely bloke, but then as I recall they all were!
