I didn't see the incident, and have only watched highlights which didn't show it, so I have no opinion. After the howls for a pen however, we were speculating that VAR must have looked at it and decided no. Indeed, where VAR is in place, I think we are going to see penalties go the same way as offsides. Play on will be the standard call until a decision comes down from upstairs.
Exactly, we did lose. The CFCTV interviewer after the game talked about us having ended Lyon's run of 16 away wins. Not so. They didn't lose the game last night, they lost the tie. The winning run is now 17.
Lyon were unhappy with the saves. They felt AKB was off her line before the ball was kicked in both cases. They were right technically, though keepers are almost always off their line too soon. I thought the first save was just about within the margin of error, but the ref really should have ordered a retake on the second one. In fact I thought VAR were checking it because the ref stood with a finger on her ear piece as if she was listening closely to some message. I turned to talk to someone behind me about that, expecting a retake but he told me she'd blown-up and pointed to the tunnel.
With 10,000 plus tickets sold as of last night, and with many people who are certain to buy them (including me) holding on until the right seats go on sale, it's a good start for sure. Now we need a couple of good performances by England during the break to boost sales even more.
We didn't have a near capacity vs Spurs earlier in the season however. The 38,000 plus number reported was tickets sold, not people through the turnstiles. There were fewer than 25,000 in the ground that day. With a bit of help from The Lionesses, some active marketing, and a bit of good weather we might even go above 25,000 for the first time. The girls would love that. Not as much as they're going to love the 60,000 plus at Camp Nou mind.
