'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is generally considered to be the Joy Division song that epitomises the break down between Ian and Deborah Curtis (and for many people it is the song that defines the band in the same way that 'There is a Light that Never Goes Out' defines The Smiths) however for me 'Insight' is the really difficult one to listen to when you consider the context whereas the 'definer' is probably Shadowplay.

when i was getting into joy division i was told thats what love will tear us apart was about. but them lyrics seem to mean more. he really was an incredible song writer. im now listening to substance with a tear in my eye.

He was that - personally I would rate him right up there with the very best and when you consider he wrote everything between the ages of about 21 and 23 that is quite astounding.

There are a lot of song writers who I think very highly of (the likes of Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Morrissey, Stuart Staples, Neil Young, Dylan, Roger Waters, Pete Townsend, Ray Davies, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, David Gedge etc etc etc ) but none of them are so great that I could say without a shadow of doubt they are comfortably better than Ian Curtis.

he wont be recognised simply because of the genre he he wrote in. and thats a massive shame.

bit harsh that. i know where your coming from but new order were a superb band too. not as good but still very, very good.

I just couldn't make the jump from Joy Division to New Order - at least they changed the band name because if they had gone down that 1980s New York club music line with the name Joy Division it would have been sacrilege!

Don't get me wrong New Order were , on many occasions, a massive step above the majority of the rest, but they just suffered in my eyes from not having to follow on from such stunning beginnings. It isn't particularly fair on them as a song write like Ian Curtis comes along so rarely and therefore it was practically impossible for them to maintain the quality.

Some good stuff on there - maybe a tad over judgmental but I still struggle to accept the massive jump in music style. I suppose it might have been worse if they has just replaced Curtis and carried on sounding like the same band but without the front man.

yeah, and im pretty impressed. i must admit i was worried it might be sh*t. went car shopping today and had it on and enjoyed it, thankfully. though the wife wasnt too happy.

Not sure about that Maksimov although I suspect that is poetic license on the part of the film makers. No denying that the lack of business acumen was a disaster however Factory Records also collapsed due to the money being poured into the Hacienda whilst it continued to lose money hand over fist. It is nice to think that this was purely down to people with their hearts in the right place but without the business sense to support it however there is no getting away from the fact that its downfall was also caused by a few too many violent incidents (including shootings) and also the fact it accommodated drugs more than drink so therefore never made enough money on the bar.

I was lucky enough to go to the Hac around 15-20 times (details are somewhat hazy ) and whist i always enjoyed Friday nights there, Saturdays were always sometime uncomfortable - from being unsure if we were going to get in (we were out of town middle calss students aftetr all!) to the atmosphere inside the club. It was a strange mixture of tension and debauchery. Most of the people were off their faces which was fine but you always had to watch your back. I remember first time going in there on a Sat and being pointed out where not to go (certain areas were patches for certain crews) . To be fair i never saw any trouble but im sure there was and you always heard stories. There was simply no way a club could continue like that and so it proved, this was more of a reason for the closure than Factorys bankruptcy (in fact the Hac ran for 5 years after Factory went down)

Opposite for me. I love JD, but New Order are simply magnificent. Technique is in my Top5 albums ever. It cannot be underestimated just what an important influence on modern dance music New Order were.

just got it on the weekend, not really had a chance to go through it yet. very happy with the songs theyve picked so cant see it being anything other than brilliant.
