Germany Vs Argentina 2014 World Cup Final

Argentina were never going to play the way Algeria and Ghana did, but if they did I think with their quality the would have beaten Germany.
Or Germany would have started killing THEM on the counter instead of the other way round

Not a very entertaining final but when one side is so much stronger than anyone else in the tournament, I guess you have to expect other teams to either kill the game or get slaughtered like Brazil did.

Happy for Schurrle and glad Messi once again proved me right, not in the same league as Ronaldo i'm afraid.

Even Messi looked embarrassed to be getting a Golden Ball he and everyone else knew he had no right to winning.

Agreed Jonty

Messi to me looks like a man whose played far too much football so early in his career, seems burnt out.

Well I'll be greedy and say I'd take both. Just searching behind the couch for a spare 250 million
A man in Scotland searching for money, there's a joke in there somewhere. ..

With JT sneaking onto the podium to join in.

Messi, Higuain, Palazzio had clear chances to score. Argentina had their chances to win.

Meanwhile, Schurrle ran down the wing and passed a beauty for Gotze who worked the ball beautifully to score. Argentina had their chances to win, but Germany won the World Cup. Now the World Cup is history and I have to say it was an exciting to watch. Plenty of good quality games, disappointment for some teams, but overall a very good tournament.

Eh?

Messi may not have been anywhere near his best but he still had a MUCH better tournament than Ronaldo.

Bloody Germans cost me a top 10 position in the office pool. I now ended 21st out of 54. No glory at all. Five euros down the drain.

Your bias is astounding.  :laugh2:

Obviously in that Argentina progressed far beyond Portugal, didn't hurt that Messi had a far stronger squad and that Ronaldo's only top class team mate got himself sent off 20 minutes into their first game, or that they had a far easier group.

Messi had a good group stage against the might of Iran and a Mikel led Nigeria, then didn't score a single goal in any of the knockout games, was anonymous in the semi and missed a golden chance in the final. Portugal were rubbish but Ronaldo scored the winner vs Ghana and played an unbelievable cross to save a point against the US, not much more he could do with such a pitiful team with Pepe suspended and Coentrao injured.

edit: To clarify i'm not saying Ronaldo had a better world cup than Messi, but taking into account their relative teams and opponents, I don't think Messi's longer run in the tournament holds any weight over Ronaldo. With the team and fixtures Messi had, he had a great chance to really shine and after the group stage he just faded.

Nice try, Jonty, but you are waaaaayyyyy off.  Don't try to beat a dead horse, your argument does not hold water.

But your original comment was "Not in the same league as Ronaldo".

Messi and Ronaldo clearly have been the world's two best players for some time. Some think Ronaldo has the edge (certainly over the last season or so), the majority think Messi is better. All down to opinion.

But to say Messi is not in the same league is something I would only expect to hear from Ronaldo's Mum!!!

Nibs I saw Ronaldo's mum buying biscuits in Lidl this afternoon and she was wearing a Barca away shirt with MESSI on the back.

It was hyperbole for effect

German Captain Philipp Lahm has announced his retirement from international football.  Suppose if you are going to pick a good time to retire it's after your country has won the World Cup. Think that he and Ashley Cole have been the best full backs in recent years.
