Hernan Crespo a flop?

Lots of misinformation in this thread. Crespo didn't feel homesick, Crespo didn't require more time to settle. Crespo wanted to return to Italy to be with his wife who, following a miscarraige, was unable to settle in London, but went to Italy where she felt more at home.

And so if anything Crespo is to be admired for putting family before fortune.
Didn't know that, thanks!

Helped us win a league title, scored some great goals and pretty much scored every time he played so no not a flop for me.What a handsome man aswell.

Thought he was brilliant in Italy and think he was a top quality striker for us. I think himself and casiraghi both had the goods to become legendary strikers for us.

South American with a good goal scoring record in Italy?

Hmmm, I wonder who we could buy....
Comparing Crespo to Cavani neatly points out how ridiculous the current transfer fees are. Cavani costs three times as much as Crespo did when we bought him and Crespo was one of our most expensive signings back then.

I was thinking the same.

Schurrle signed for £18m at 22 a young pacey winger.

When Robben signed at around the same age, same position I think he cost £11m.

The market is completely over inflated now it's got a bit ridiculous.

I think Crespo's time here can be assessed as something between a flop and a success. I think given his price, his family problems, and his overall lack of gametime in his 3 years it's fair to say that he didn't hit the heights that we would have expected. That said though, Crespo is the most natural finisher I've seen in a Chelsea shirt (I'm only 23 so can't vouch for Kerry Dixon, Peter Osgood, Bobby Tambling etc) and he scored some terrific and really important goals. The ones against Liverpool and Wigan on his left foot spring to mind. As has been mentioned, his movement was terrific too. He made a valuable contribution to the retention of our title in 2005-06, and I'll remember him for that.

Off the pitch he couldn't settle. On the pitch he never in my eyes showed that. He never looked disinterested, he was always professional in that respect.

Such a shame we didn't get more playing time out of him because he was one of the best center forwards i have ever seen. His movement was the unreal, sometimes we would watch his runs and the space he made for himself.

His finishing was brilliant, left foot, right foot and with his head and he could score a screamer or two as well.

I was left wanting more purely because i thought he was THAT good not because i thought he was a flop. But the again thats just my opinion.

Well if clubs like us and City and Real didn't keep Paying these overinflated prices then clubs wouldn't keep charging them.

UNfrotunately it's a lose-lose situation, because you can't refuse to pay them, because some other sugardaddy will swoop in and pay it anyway.

That said, Lazio did pay 35m or something for him from Parma, his price dropped by the time he came to us because he'd spent a lot of time out with injury I think.

Thanks for the replies everyone,

Crespo got injured for Inter midway through the 02/03 when he was on absolute fire (9 CL goals in 12 games), and only scored a few more times for them before the end of that season, and then he moved to Chelsea.

I remember a stunning header he scored for Chelsea, I want to say it was against Fulham? in his first season.

He was absolutely devastating in Italy for years, I will always remember his hat trick vs us in 98/99 season which forced Lippi to resign as our coach even quicker than he was supposed to (he was going to Inter that summer). He scored a brilliant back heel from a cross from Seba Veron.

Always wished we had signed him. Good to see Chelsea fans don't consider him a flop.

I think it was at Craven Cottage. Got a vague mental picture of the goal you must be talking about.

I remember him scoring a stunning goal against Fulham, but it was one where he side-footed the ball into the opposite corner of the goal straight from a (Joe Cole?) cross.

That was in his second year, and I think it was Cole with the cross.

What I remember most are the Wigan goal and the home match against Liverpool where he timed a run perfectly to beat the offside trap, lobbed Reina with his first touch, and then did almost exactly the same thing about ten minutes later only to have it wrongly flagged off.

I was very excited when we signed Crespo, as for me, he was a a genuine superstar in the world game. He is one of the most naturally gifted finishers i have had the pleasure of watching, and on his day was majestic.

wouldnt say he was a flop at all, think he was under utilised during his stay, and possibly handled poorly by claudio and jose.

His header from a SWP cross was also a good goal. Excellent cross on the half volley and a header to match
