tried to install Vista SP2 and it failed. ive since found out that the reason it failed is it must update the system boot files. If third-party disk management tools are used to "clone" disks or partitions, the SP2 installer will be unable to uniquely identify the correct system boot files. therefore if anyone buys a laptop or PC with Vista pre-installed then they will struggle to get SP2 installed. you basically have to turn of the PC and unplug any drives other than the system one, or go through a ridiculous workaround bo**ocks involving renaming files, renaming folders and registering sh*t loads of DLL`s manually. utter pile of bo**ocks.

Have got exactly the same problem but with SP1, haven't been able to update the SP's since Vista came out (well at least when they issued the first service pack).

Getting Windows 7 next week when it's out, hopefully that won't have that problem when the time comes!

me too, vista is a complete f**king dog of an OS. same situation as with ME, rushed it out and it sucked then XP came out and was what ME should have been. 7 will be what Vista should have been, the w**kers.

I actually like Vista, well at least the look and cosmetics, but yea, if you can't update the service packs, most of the big fixes can't be applied. That's the main reason of changing to Windows 7 really, bit more reliability.

me too, i was impressed with the look and some of the tweaks, but the system itself is shocking. until you turn it off the amount of times your asked "are you sure you want to to that" is so annoying when trying to do anything. 7 is much better from what ive seen and im definately gonna have a go.

I've heard that Microsoft are offering Windows & for only $20 when it comes out to any existing Vista users. I don't use the computer that much to be able to know what's good or not, but the amount of times I try running more than one application at a time, my computer slows down drastically, and often results in one of the programs (usually IE or WMP) will stop working.

Although I don't know much about it all, I'll be taking advantage of getting rid of Vista for an introductory price

It's actually a very typical question when it comes to Apple products. It's more about style than function, which annoys me greatly... incidentally my geeky side has a yearning for Linux, but my gaming side sticks to Windows. In case you don't know, it tends to go like this:

Well that doesn't apply to me, although it is stylish - it's faster (playing games such as FM is so much better), easier to use, faster, the support is better and so on and the security system is well... faultless. I'd like to point out that I've had a PC and Window's laptop for years, so I can compare the 2, and whilst it never let me down, saying the only thing it's got over it is it's looks is incorrect.

Also, if Windows is useful, why the opening topic?

I am a Mac and a PC fan.

I currently own a Mac Pro workstation and a PC laptop and I've been very pleased with both of them. I don't really get the Mac vs. PC thing and why PC people always get so defensive about the whole issue and try to say that Macs are all style and not convenient to use and that you can't customize Macs and so on, which is absolute bo**ocks. PCs and Macs both do a good job, but I'm glad I don't have to work with a computer with Vista on it. With Mac Pro there's only color so I didn't need to make any choices and I don't really care what the color is anyway. I edit video and author DVDs with my Mac and for that purpose it's the best computer I've ever had.

I'd agree with you there, they're extremely convenient, because they're plug and play and yeah, editing video, and also things like Photoshop tend to run a bit better on one. They work well for that kind of thing and browsing the internet. I just don't see them as much more than that though. I play games on my PC - well my laptop, my PC runs Linux, but anyway - and that's the main thing I use it for, so a Mac would be a bit useless for me. I wasn't having a go at Macs, I was just saying that in general they're bought for the fact that they're easy, and look good. I use Vista and I really don't get why everyone hates it so much, I've not had a problem with it, admittedly I have all the service packs, and I'm capable of not getting viruses, which is most people's problem with a PC. The only thing which can annoy me a little is the constantly having to click Continue, when you do something in Program Files or whatever, but that's not exactly something that'll ruin my experience. Anyway, I swear I ran away from you. :139: Incidentally if you're wondering, I do have a gripe with Apple as a company, and that's their PR. They can sell anything, for example the Macbook Air. Steve Jobbs actually said something along the lines of "You don't need an optical drive." People decided that he was right. I don't like the way they use gimmicks to sell their products, and the fact that people buy into it. I'm running away again now.

I'm not too sure about the consumer priced Macs(iMacs and regular Mac Books etc.), but the professional work stations and laptops are top class(I've used both of them in my work). I like the Mac OS(I haven't upgraded to Snow Leopad yet, though) and I think it's the best operating system I've used. Fast and very efficient to use.

Yeah, I was just speaking in generalisations, the same could be said of Linux really, I mean you don't have to compile all the programs if you don't want to... it's just I had to hash together a driver for my wireless card for it, so it's kind of the impression I have. I've not used any of their professional stuff, so can't really comment on that, but I've used one or two consumer level ones, but it's just not my cup of tea... I really, really like clutter on my desktop, it makes me feel at home somehow. This is exactly why I haven't upgraded yet. Every new operating system will have at least some amount of bugs because they are more or less rushed to the market. Leopard functions ever so smoothly on my Mac so there's no need for me to make the upgrade just yet. Those people who make the upgrade to a new operating system(whatever the platform and operating system) amongst the first will always serve as beta testers who pay to be beta testers, even though they hoped they would get a working product. I'm not defending Apple here, just stating how I see it. When you buy a first generation operating system, computers, mobile phone, etc. you take the risk of getting a product that has not been properly tested.

Aye, I completely agree with that. The same happened with Vista, hence the people struggling to get the update working having big problems. Obviously it'll work fine after a few fixes and whatnot, but still, Apple do try to form the reputation that they make things work straight away with no updating, or any of the 'hard work' people associate with Windows. I'm becoming really cynical in my old age, it seems.
