I don't feel like it's been rammed down my throat at all. I think the thread starter should've thought before he posted.

Nah that rarely happens around here!!

I think Clubhappy is entirely entitled to feel the way he does - personally I don't agree with him but it is pretty clear he has thought about it!

I think we probably have more fuss about minutes silence & things like it precisely because these events are so long ago. The longer ago they become, the less people there are remaining who actually remember the event, so I think it's just a reaction against that to make sure we do actually remember this stuff.

I'm sure I've noticed it in recent years with WWI commemorations, I think it's right that these things are made a bit of a fuss of, lest we forget etc...

In the case of footy, we all accept that the game has become more like big business & we take the good with the bad on that, however we should never forget old players and our proud British footballing history. God help us in the future if there are young'uns who remember no further back than the Premier League.

Though it is difficult to fully empathise with others tragedy & fatigue can set in, but you've got to respect others time to remember. I won't say anything about 'big family of football' or use the words 'beautiful' or 'game', admirable restraint I reckon.

Forget about minutes silence, what really p*sses me off are those stupid cuddly toys that are laid out.

Yes i thought about this whole debate before i started the original post, im not changing my views and i'm entitled to express my opinion on the subject. I still hold the views expressed .

What pisses me off about the whole issue, is , The hype surrounding the name, Manchester United. Would the same attention be given to , say, Hartlepool, or Oxford Utd or any le ss high profile club ? Take Hillsborough, yes a tragic incident, one which i remember watching unfold, horiffic and heartbreaking. Again, it's regarded as a milestone if football history , annaversaries will continue to grab media attention, thats ok, but what about Ibrox disaster in 1971, The Bradford fire in 1985 ? do they not deserve recognition in the media too ?

My gripe is that because its Man Utd, then we should all pay attention and feel sorry for them.Ask any of the modern day Man Utd fans to name the team that perished, see how they get on.

I think it's been a good thread, people have expressed different opinions and apart from me getting Bluebeard all wrong no-one has upset anyone else (yet!). With regards the way the media are playing up the Munich disaster compared with others I agree that the more higher profile clubs will get more media coverage, that's kind of a given though whether right or wrong it's always going to happen. i think it was Loz that said, there are far worse disasaters that get very little media attention. The reason is money! A media will only survive by making money, they therefore have to produce (print, write, speak, etc) the stories that carry the widest interest.

There's no doubting the size of Manchester Utd. But.....

One of the reasons Manu are as big as they is ironically due to the Munich disaster. It was world-wide news at the time and the coverage found its way into the hearts and minds of people at the time. Some have always had a soft spot for the Mancs ever since, and it may even be the reason some supporters, inadvertantly, through familys club ties etc still follow the club.

The news of this tragedy was certainly a 'global' affair, a word use often within the branding machine of modern day football.

I agree. Frightening.

two things that have shown the bad side of manyoo in this over the last couple of days. firstly they had their sponsors name, AIG, on the pofficial mural at old trafford. then this:-

'Manchester United are embroiled in an unseemly row over the Munich memorial service after trying to charge £5,000 for television footage of the event. BBC top brass in London were furious after being told they would have to pay for pictures from a service commemorating the plane crash 50 years ago, which killed eight of the Busby Babes and three club officials'

now this doesnt mean i feel any less about the sad deaths of the people on board the plane, but i think it highlights the crassness and ignorance displayed by football clubs.

I've been reading various articles on the disaster and my overall view is that 23 people died, 11 of them Manchester United players. These men died shortly after this shot was taken:

Imagine if it were Lampard, Terry, Cole (Joe), Drogba, Cech... then get the younger players of Sinclair, Smith, Cork... I'd be devistated.

Great post Gem, and on top of that you'd expect your kids and their kids to remember them, specially on big anniversaries.

as i said gem, what i posted is not anything to do with the sad loss of the people on the plane. its just to highlight the way football clubs manage themselves. charging the bbc, advertisers on the murial etc. its a disgrace. and if we had lost the said people and chelsea fc did what man utd are doing id be disgusted at them.

Ah, I do apologise then DKW.

Apart from charging the BBC, I haven't heard/read anything else, but it just goes to show how classy the big wigs at Man Utd are.

Some other pictures of the crash site taken not long after:

Not meaning to put a downer on it all, but I must admit although I was aware a crash had happened, I never knew the details of it till now. Reading and seeing pictures of Bobby Charlton hospital... The club have acted in a totally pathetic manner over this recently, seemingly trying to get money out of people who just want to pay their respect. Quite sickening really.

First of all I would like to say I don't feel like it is being rammed down my throat and I think rememberance is highly appropriate.

I met you once and from your posts I know you are a thoroughly decent chap...

Would it be fair to say that there is a bit of the Irish thing coming in here? I for one, used to visit Dublin once a month with my work, and I always felt that the Manc and Liverpoo support was completely over the top. I was often expressed opinions and bullsh*t about Chelsea that was not even based on fact from people, unlike your good self, that had not even stepped foot in a premiership ground. Usually their source of opinion was based on Sky sports coverage, who I would imagine are making a right meal of it at the moment ! The point I am making, it would wind me up I reckon if I was Dublin based...

Please let me know if I am speaking out of turn.

Your not speaking out of turn at all Andy, in fact the Dublin branch of the'' lets adore Man Utd '' have been in full swing for years here. This week especially has been a pain in the f**kin hole. Im expected to sympathise with them , most of whom struggle to give you the full facts as to the tragedy. By all means pay respect to those who died, and i would never for one miniute be disrespectful to the players and their families , but im not prepared to jump on board the whole Man U sympathy train, and im pissed off hearing from their fans how terrible they all feel .

In 1949 Torino had a great team, practically made up the whole Italian national team. They too had an air crash disaster killing all but one. I was wondering whether in Italy they give the same sort of exposure as we do here.

I had tears in my eyes watching the tribute at halftime, couldn't imagine it happening to our lot, or any other young talents.

So true Gem.

Read this earlier today and this too made me feel really sad.........

After Duncan’s death, Gladstone (his father) left his job at the ironworks to be a gardener in the cemetery. “His job was just to sweep up the leaves,” Sarah Anne once said, “but really I think he wanted to be close to Duncan.”
