Next Gen

I like PC even though its expensive, not sure I will buy a new console.

Gave up on PC gaming many years ago simply because of the expense, and got sick of having to upgrade ram, CPU, Graphics card etc every time a new top end game came out. Even though it is the best platform for gaming.

PC Gaming is only really expensive if you look at the PC as a whole as being for gaming rather than the PC being for general usage with the graphics card, and the increased cost of some components which need a slightly better spec for gaming, being what you're paying for gaming. If you look at it that way, PC gaming will cost you £200-250 per generation.

Here's the current rumours of the 'next gen':

PS4 will be the most powerful and will use more 'normal' hardware compared to the PS3 and it's cell. PS3 was supposed to be the most powerful this gen but some technical hitches mean that cross platform stuff usually looks worse on the console.

720: Rumours that MS will show off a tablet that works with it at CES next week but I suspect that's just journalists hyping Windows tablets. Only thing known about the console itself is that it's going to use Windows 8 and it'll have have the funky 'Metro' interface. Rumours of a 2nd Generation Kinect which can spot more fine movement.

Wii U: Nintendo know their E3 showing last year, where they failed to even make it clear it was an actual new console, not just a Wii controller, was a total disaster. Console will be re-unveiled with slightly higher specs so it should sit in between the current gen and next gen in terms of performance.

The xbox 360 with better graphics, smoother running, and less heat would do me fine.

Time fo the old ps3 v xbox debate

Last point won't happen sadly. Cutting down on heat with cutting edge tech usually means lowering the power or making it more expensive. I'd be suprised if they haven't learnt from the Red Ring of Death though.

Been a few 720 rumours in the last few days, latest rumour suggests the CPU will be a more modern version of the chip in 360 and it using the latest graphics card tech from ATI (7xxx series). If they were to use the top of the line graphics chip that's just been released, it'd be 10-15 times as powerful as the 360.

True but I can dream ha!

The new graphics card you're talking about is that the one there's a video on youtube of it where they show you some grass and a rock (I think from memory). They look almost identical to the real thing? We might be talking about different things but that would be immense inside the 360/720. I'm sure they said they were selling it to Microsoft aswell, Could be talking bollox though.

I have both, the PS3 blows away the 360. The Xbox is now used as a prop to hold open the bedroom door during the summer.
Only people who don`t know how to use it properly say things like that.

To be fair... Whilst the playstation and xboxes are alright. A quality gaming PC is miles ahead of both.

Well, with the new die shrinkages of the Sandy Bridge CPUs, it shouldn't be too much to expect it to be cooler. Isn't the Intel Ivy Bridge range going to be using a 22nm tri-gate transistor? That's only going to be out in April as well. One assumes that it wouldn't be too far off to expect it or at least the technology behind it to be used in a next gen console. So it probably will be cooler and more power efficient.

The console wars are ridiculous haha, ill just stick with my PC!

New game comes out, barely runs on pc, need new GFX card, memory, HDD, KERCHING!!!!!

Doom 4 is probably going to be announced soon. No doubt that'll need a new graphics card...

Generally consoles are a fair bit behind when it comes to die shrinkage (3DS for example uses 45nm, the Wii U is expected to use the same). Guessing this is because they're custom chips that need dedicated production lines that take time to tool up and also that because they need millions made up quickly, they can't afford the high failure rates of a new, smaller process.

More console rumours floating around:

720 will be using a 66xx series graphics card (year old tech that's used in entry level gaming systems) and will feature anti-used game tech. That's a fair bit weaker than was rumoured before

Wii U will either be slightly more powerful than the 360 or 20% less powerful than the 720 (depending on which sites you believe)

PS4 still widely thought to be the most powerful console.

I can't really offer anything about the better graphics, but the Xbox 360 S (Slim) does run smoother and generates less heat. It also draws less power since it's on the 45nm architecture. My son has the "Jasper" (the latest of the old models that's not susceptible to the dreaded RROD) and I have the S. Mine is much quieter and doesn't nearly spew the heat that his does.
