Is that fairly normal?

I must admit 'Friday I'm in Love' may well have been the moment I started to doubt The Cure ever had another good album in them.

It is the same feeling I got when REM released 'Shiny Happy People'

OK I have listened to it and I understand what you mean by it following on from Disintegration however although I'm afraid I would classify it as nothing more than an album filler when compared to the quality of Disintegration.

Surprised you think it is one of the finest they have ever produced. I like it but nothing more than that.

If I compare it to something like '10:15 Saturday Night', 'A Play for Today', 'Forest' 'One Hundred Years' 'Push.....in fact loads and loads from albums up to and even including 'Wish' (though not all of Wish, far from it) then I don't see it in the class of any of them

It is for me Loz, maybe its a grower for you....

I just love that track, cant put my finger on why.

well I have kept in my itunes library so I dare say it will come round form time to time

Maybe we just like different types of Cure songs - for example what would be your top two or three off Disintegration, Wish and Kiss Me Kiss ME Kiss Me (I choose these three as I think they offer a range a little more than some of the earlier albums)

I dont think there can be any doubt about that - actually if you were to ask me to list my 3 fave Cure albums i would plump for Disintegration, Pornography and Bloodflowers, all three albums in Bobby Smiths linked slower more melancholy trilogy wheres the tunes you list are slightly more uptempo and more abrasive.

Glad you mentioned 'A Forest'. What a tune. The first song in every goths handbook! The 12" extended mix of that is fantastic, as is the version on Mixed Up (im sure you will be appalled i said that!)

Disintegration is tough. Id go for Plainsong and predictably 'Lullaby' if pushed. Kiss Me id go for The Kiss and Why Cant I Be You? (an unlikely choice i guess). Im not really best qualified to talk about Wish as i dont actually own it im sure ive heard it but i never really bothered with it after i heard the first 2 singles which i hated (High and Friday Im...) I thought the latter was simply terrible. Compare this to the band of Seventeen Seconds etc. Good lord. Shocking.

On the other hand what did you think of The Lovecats ? Now that is how The Cure should do pop music. Fantastic stuff!

EDIT - actually isnt 'From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea' on Wish ? I do actually like that song a lot. Its on a live album ive got somwhere.

Seeing The Cure perform that (or mime it) on TOTP put me off them for life. To this day, I've never knowingly heard any more of their music.

BJD

For me it is

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me

Why Can't I Be You (so we agree!!)

Just Like Heaven (which surprises me as it is quite a throwaway pop tune but there is just a nice innocence about it)

One More Time

Disintegration

Fascination Street (I think this is one of the band's finest ever moments)

Disintegration

Lullaby

Wish

Edge of the Deep Green Sea (best song on the album by a country mile - they could have made the entire side of one album that song and I would have been content)

Open (second best song by just less than a country mile, call it a rural but with a few local shops mile)

A Letter to Elise (although my third choice it is a long way behind the other two)

So we do cross over a little however I think we definitely like different aspects to The Cure as none of those would be in my top three (admittedly I haven't heard Bloodflowers)

Yes 'The Forest' is a stunniing song and yes you should be disowned for the Mixed Up comment

Actually if the only version I had ever heard was The Mixed Up one then I would still like it a lot, it is just that I don't think it compares favourably to the original. I actually think that is the case for nearly all the versions on Mixed Up - if they were the original Cure versions then I would like them, it is just that when you see what they ahve done to something you loved so much first time round it is sometimes hard to digest.

Bluebeard - I honestly think if you were to hear some of their earlier stuff you would like some of it. I will see what I have on my PC at home and send you some (it is an other Smiths moment for you!!)

Send him 'Carnage Visors' Loz! (all 26 minutes of it)

Cheers for that Maksimov - enjoyed it a lot - that youtube user hasa lot of stuff worth watching!

great stuff, a brilliant watch mate.

ive really got into the specials these past few years. am going to see the current neville staples version in march in brum (with the beat)

'ghost town' was recorded about 200 metres from where i live in leamington spa, when we sell the house its definitley going to be selling point!

as far as im aware there are no specials dvds im afraid

In 2000 I saw a live performance from this sort of 2-Tone supergroup which consisted of members from Specials, Selecter and The Beat and they played songs from all the three forementioned bands. Pauline Black and Roddy Radiation were there, that I'm sure of and I think Neville Staples was there too. I can't remember the exact lineup for that night, but I can remember it was an evening of beer, cider, good tunes and loads of FUN!
