Reece James

Who is listing him as one of the top fullbacks though? It’s US Chelsea fans. Do you ever watch England now with Walker, Trent and now with Rico Lewis & Livramento, and say England are missing Reece James? He is a very good player but I feel he is one of those like Mbappe & Bellingham that benefits from good PR and has been made out to be better than he is. If you dig deeper into his stats; bar that one season where he outperformed every metrics (same with Chilwell and Mount), he hasn’t really been outstanding. The funny thing is Chilwell has better stats than James, and no one is heralding him as the best LB on the planet.
The difference between James and Chilwell is that the latter hasn't looked anywhere near his former self whereas when James comes back from injury, he immediately picks up where he left off. Problem we need to solve is to keep him fit, as when fit for a season he puts up TAA numbers whilst also being a rock defensively. He's only 24 and there is enough time for him to mitigate those injuries, ala Kyle Walker.

This isn't a strictly "US Chelsea Fans" train of thought. I find it ironic you say that when England fans are constantly reminded of Reece James every time TAA or Walker put up the occasional defensive stinker.

James has failed to make 19 league games for the last two seasons and I expect he will fail to make 19 this season too. If that is the case, I would want him to go.

Both Carvajal and Walker have only missed half of a league season once in their career. James has done it twice in two years.
I really don't care about the number of matches. The point I am showing you is that Kyle Walker had chronic groin issues which made him injury prone up until the age of 24.

James is 24 so it isn't too late for him in the slightest.

James isn't injury prone though. That implies he's sometimes not injured.

If James becomes just injury prone I'd be happy to keep him

Well won't be long for the maverick to show himself and remind us that have forgotten how he's the best in the world.

Let's not forget he played most of pre-season. It's only pre-season but didn't particular see anything outstanding to warrant the hype.

Better to say a fantastic car that unfortunately is off the road more often than not and unlikely to pass it's next MOT!
Are you saying reece james is SORN?

Are we really now questioning  Reece James`s quality, Reece James who has proven himself to be absolutely world class? Putting aside his availability problems, anyone questioning his quality is insane, I guarantee every single manager in football would take an injury free Reece James in an instant.

I have not read all of the posts recently. He's not injured again is he? He literally only came back yesterday

I think a lot of supporters have just got a bit fed up with him, which in a way, is a bit understandable.

The injuries is one thing, but he has let us down on a few occasions now with silly tackles and red cards, that when he's meant to be captain. Be great if he plays against Liverpool and puts in a performance like we used to see and then re-establishes himself in the side. A fit and performing Reece James would improve us no end and greatly improve our chances of top 4.

That's fine, be annoyed with him. But questioning his quality is just nonsense, he's absolutely one of the next right backs in the world, at his peak he was up there as one of the best players overall.

Thats irrelevant though? James played 47 of those games for wigan. Almost all of those games were before his problems started.

IF he has another season of barely featuring, then there is absolutely no comparison. You cant just pull up the appearances when he was a healthy player, you have to look at the trend.

If James manages to string 3/4 months together with no injuries, I'll start to feel differently. But I just don't see that happening.

Ledley King played 170+ games before his problems started. And he was still then able to play more than James plays for us.

I can't think of another player who has gone off the rails appearance wise, for so long, and then had a career.

I like him, a lot. And if there's a way he can have a career in a softer league/environment, I'd be delighted for him. I just don't see how he's going to have any career for us.
What relevance who he plays for have to do with anything? The conversation is about availability. Reece has played as many games as Carvajal, whom Madrid wouldn't even consider selling, since becoming a pro.

Robben had multiple seasons at Bayern where he played less than half of the league games, do you think they wish they'd sold him? He seemed to have a pretty respectable career.

Your conversation is about his career. Mine is about where he is right now, and that means looking at his last two seasons.

With Robben, why do people keep giving examples without looking them up?

How many times did robben have two seasons in a row where he wasn't available for half the games? None. It happened 3 times in 9 seasons and in one of those he still played 9 times in Europe.

If robben was their highest paid player and did that 3 seasons in a row. Munich would have got rid. Same with Madrid and Carvajal.

That didn't happen with any of those players. It is probably happening with James.

I’m really looking forward to Reece shutting several mouths on here.
I would absolutely love it if he shuts me up. Because he's probably in my top 5 favourite players to watch in the last 30 years

I just don't see it happening. I expect him to suffer another long injury this side of Christmas

This doesn't make any sense at best. Even a bit daft to think insanity is what has happened when people link availability to being injured and more so, the impact of injuries over time on the ability of a sports person to perform at optimal level.

There's a reason why people grimace when star players pull up in a game with injuries. They aren't just thinking f**k sake he's going off but how does this impact him/us going forward.

The question is not about his quality, but the impact to that quality by injury(ies).

Literally nothing to do with what I wrote.

I hope he doesn’t start against Liverpool, match is way too intense for him, even as a substitute.

I’d prefer to start giving him games in conference league and go from there. This season should be all about bedding him back in the starting 11, make sure he is 100% over his niggling injuries. I’ll take a season sacrifice to have him playing regularly for several years.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him.

So great to see him back in training and with a smile on his face. Looked a little leaner also.  This time Reece - you got it!

I think him getting leaner will really be good for him, hopefully we can manage him effectively to get him the game time & match fitness his body requires.
