if youre not basing your judgement on his CFC games then you MUST be basing them on his previous seasons at reading where he was 1) instrumental in winning the championship, 2) named in the Championship Team of the Year by the PFA no less than twice, 3) named the best player not in the Prem by FourFourTwo magazine and 4) was subsequently snapped up by the Premiership Champions.

well f**k me, he does sound sh*te doesnt he when you look at it that way!

admit it, youve watched him on TV maybe 3 times, not been impressed and slam the book closed, baying "rubbish"..

Being the best player in the Championship isn't saying that much. Remember Kezman scored goals for fun in the Dutch league and Florent Malouda was french football player of the year.

 
sidwell is not rubbish. he's just not good enough for us. would be a solid signing for an upper mid table club (as a squad player), and a possibly crucial player for the sides fighting relegation (or with lingering concerns of relegation). that is the level of the player.

 
I think that maybe he was bought as cover for the ANC, in the hope that he'd be up to the job. As it it's a gamble that doesn't seem to have paid off.

Foresight is a wonderful thing .. or ... this is where I use large amounts of willpower to stop myself from adding a completely and utterly non-PC comment.

 
I can't understand the amount of negativity towards Sidwell. How can anyone judge if he's good enough when he hasn't had (and won't get) a decent run in the team?

Any player who only makes the occasional appearance isn't going to be at their best - they won't be match fit, and won't have the team experience to make a decent impact.

 
I think the negativity was there from the outset, opinion being divided between those who saw it as a pointless signing and those who thought we should give him a chance. Some of this undoubtedly comes from the fact that he was signed from Reading, and THAT game where an ex-team-mate of Sidwell's indelibly wrote himself into the list of those who should be jumped upon from a great height feet first and from that point onwards baseball-batted into a pulp.

So ok, he's only been here a few months, and he hasn't played that much, but there's a kind of anonymity about him still. Hardly surprising under the circumstances, I know. If he is to make any kind of impact, assuming we don't offlload him in January, I think it'll have to be during the ANC.

Aside from all that, I was one of those who couldn't see the point of signing Sidwell's. I'd like to be proved wrong, really I would.

 
As you say, Lofty, I think he was brought in primarily as cover for the ANC, what with Essien & Mikel both going.

He always looked a decent player to me when he was at Reading, but I haven't formed an opinion of him yet as a Chelsea player, simply because he hasn't played enough. Only time will tell.....

 
An unfair comparison perhaps, but... Ballack I thought looked up to speed when he came on in the Carling Cup game and granted he played less than half a game he didn't look like he'd been out for 6 months. Whenever Sidwell comes on he always looks like he just returned from being out for 6 months.

 
well after watching mikel and essien in the blackburn match, id say sidwell isnt any worse then them right now...

 
sorry, but I can't agree with that at all. You talk about none of us really watching sidwell, and we only know of him in the limited games he has played for Chelsea; then, you come up with a degrading comment about Essien and Mikel based on one poor game?

Who says Sidwell wouldhvae been any better out there today? I bet if he had played today, and put in a poor performance there would be people saying "not good enough," and you would still defend him. But you say that Mikel and Essien are poor after one performance and expect us to go with that?
