Timo Werner

One thing I am sure of with Leipzig top of the Bundesliga and a chance to win it for the first time ever. , Werner is not joining CFC this window.

Transfer news suggest it's either us or Liverpool in the race for Timo.

Then we got no hope. He would be nuts to pick us over Liverpool the way both sides are.

Don’t believe a second of it. I doubt the rumours would have come up if we beat Newcastle.

I would think long and hard if I was Timo. Neither team can hand him a starter-spot. Stylewise Liverpool is better as they actually can drag out defences from their shell opposed to us. If you look how he scores it is from open play and quick attacks. We have 1-2 of those in a game at home.

Tammy is an excellent player and will start ahead of Timo at first. Same goes with Liverpool-forwards.

There is no problem to see Tammy and Timo together as well.

Just let's hope something will happen until the window will be closed.

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann told the Bundesliga website: "From this deeper position, he's much more involved in our build-up play and combinations. In the last few years all his moments have come in transition, whereas now he has his moments in combination play too. He's having many more touches of the ball than in previous years, and this new position has done his development good, playing in between the lines against teams who sit deep. That's another trait he'll need if he wants to be one of the best in Europe. There are a lot of teams who sit deep and defend deep against you, and he needs that second way of being dangerous to opponents too, and he's definitely developed that this year."

Sounds ideal for the prem I must admit

I think Tammy is doing fine, I just think we need a viable backup striker.  Jovic and Werner, while they would be great additions, would likely push Tammy for starting time.  I am not sure who would be available that fits a mold to support, rather than take the spotlight away from, Tammy.
Isn't that the point of top level sport? The best gets to play? Just because Tammy is from the academy doesn't guarantee him a spot in the lineup

For all of those suggesting he is the answer to our striking issues. Check out his game this morning against Bayern.

Cost them the game by missing a sitter that Morata would have scored.

Thought you were better than that tbh.

If it wasn't a pattern it would be fine. But he misses lots. Need to learn our lesson from Morata.
How much do actually watch him play though?

Your main gripe was that he doesnt do well against packed defences, which is fair enough, although im not sure what strikers are out there that have a body of work proving they can regularly do it against teams that sit deep, because those strikers are already at elite clubs.

Now it is that he misses easy chances, again its a fair criticism, but generally the guys who score a lot, are also high in big chances missed. His goal scoring and assist record is better than morata's. Morata had never started regularly until we signed him, Werner has generally always been a 1st team player.

I dont see the comparison between the 2 at all.

Werner isnt perfect, he isnt going to suddenly turn us in title contenders. But when you consider what is out there, and his reported buy out clause, it seems like a very interesting signing in my opinion.

What names are you throwing into the ring then, that are more clinical, have a good record at scoring against packed defences, and are available for a decent price?

I've watched him a bit this year. I don't like judging players on Youtube clips. I also like Halstenberg from Leipzig who should be our left back target in my view.

If you read previous posts carefully it is both. He struggles against the deep defences when his pace is out of the equation and he misses lots as well as scoring.

I think he has his positives. He could play off Tammy and he presses well which we need. Buyout clause also helps. But as for him being the main man. He's every chance of being another Morata in my view.

Part of the challenge is that there isn't much out there. Certainly not many who are compatible with Tammy. Raul Jimenez would be my pick but he couldn't play in a two with Tammy. They are a bit similar. More and more I'm of the view we should be building goals in other positions and backing Tammy as the main man.

If you believe that to be the case, why do you shoot down Werner at every opportunity?

Raul Jimenez has done great for Wolves, although i dont really see us paying the large fee it would take, when he is 28/29 with no resale value.

It intersting you mention Jimenez, his goal scoring record in europe was average at best before he went to wolves. Would you be happy if the club signed a player that hadnt scored more than 6 leagues goals a season in Europe? Signing the 'next Jimenez' would cause murder in our fanbase!

At least with Werner he has a great scoring record in a top league, and he's young and versatile enough to grow into a top player.

All of this is moot anyway, he will probably end at liverpool, and thrive in that klopp system.

I'd take a punt on Odsonne Edouard at Celtic ...

Werner has banged in 19 goals or more in the last 4 seasons, Morata managed that once before coming to us.

don't disrespect Werner like that.

Your thoughts on Jimenez and his price are all fair. I like him a lot as a player but it'd be hard to get a deal. Other player I like a lot for the right price is Osimhen from Lille but again he may be too similar to Tammy. Key thing is that new strikers emerge every year. No one knew who Jovic was 18 months ago. Haaland most didn't know who he was 6 months ago. We have a good one in Tammy I'm happy to strengthen our goals in other parts of the park and wait for the right player.

As far as overall approach for me it comes down to price and risk. Jimenez was a 12 month loan with the option to buy. Very low risk. The best clubs at working the market and I'll single out Napoli, Juventus and Dortmund do a great job at taking on talent at the right price with low risk.

Our strategy for a few years has been big fees for potential. Pulisic, Morata and Kepa are three recent examples of us paying huge money for players who we couldn't be sure about. 2 of the 3 haven't worked out, 1 could still be a good signing. I'd put Werner in that category 60m buyout for a guy with a big ceiling but some real question marks. Notably does he suit England and can he finish in the big moments. Those are huge questions and for me that isn't smart business.

Like most I think our best transfer work was done when Emenalo bought DeBruyne, Courtois, Lukaku, Zouma and Oscar for not much. We took some risks but they were done at the right price. I'd like to see us invest more like that and save the 60m fees for players who are at the elite end and we have less questions about.
