You should move Cech to CR for the sake of accuracy.

Shouldn't IP be credited with a few more good buys - considering Bates only gave him 2 bob and an old Wrigley's wrapper to buy with?

What about Tommy Baldwin who we got as part of the deal of George Graham going to the Arse !!!!

I wasn't sure whether it was Ranieri or Mourinho who signed him - he arrived in June 2004 which was around the time Ranieri left (I think). I bow to your superior knowledge though, Tim, and have changed it

I've also sneakily added a couple more that I'd forgotten about, Ian Hutchinson (possibly bargain of the century at ?2,500) and Micky Droy. I'll probably keep remembering others as time goes by, senile dementia is setting in nicely now I'm in my 50's

What, like Joe Allon, Robert Fleck, Tony Cascarino and Mal Donaghy?

Admittedly, Ian Porterfield did sign Dmitri Kharine for ?400,000, but I'd say that was a good signing rather than a great signing. Mick Harford, Clive Allen & Vinnie Jones also fall into this category in my humble opinion, but I acknowledge that others might well disagree.

I was going to add Tommy Baldwin, as he was one of my favourite players of the time, but I'm not sure what the exact transfer deal was. As far as I can find out, we gave Arsenal George Graham and ?25,000 for Tommy, but it's unclear how much George Graham was valued at.

I thought it was the other way round, i.e. they gave us ?25,000 plus Tommy Baldwin for George Graham? At that time Graham was highly rated but Tommy was still comparatively unknown.

Same here, and I think he gets overshadowed by Ossie,Hutch etc... but he is still one of the clubs top goal scorers ( I think about 11/12 on the all time list?).BB i think we got money plus Tommy for Graham?

Tommy Baldwin scored 7 goals in 17 games for Arsenal before he was spotted by Tommy Docherty, who signed him for Chelsea in September 1966 as part of the deal that took George Graham to Arsenal.
He played for Chelsea from 1966 - 1974, and scored 74 goals in 187 appearances, which is impressive by any standards. You're right, he was often overlooked and underrated, buy Ossie gave him credit, acknowledging that they worked well together.

I agree with you, it doesn't make sense otherwise - but I looked at a couple of websites and books, and they said the same thing - that Baldwin cost us ?25,000 plus George Graham.

I've been searching around since, and found another site which states we sold George Graham to Arsenal for ?75,000 and Tommy Baldwin - sounds a lot more like it!

I was thinking more along the lines what he had at his disposal in terms of cash and what he managed to do with it.

Do you reckon Keith Weller was a good or a great buy?

In his autobiography Tommy Docherty reckons we got ?50,000 plus Tommy Baldwin for Graham.

Keith Weller was a good player, I liked him. He cost ?100,000 but as he was only with us for about 15 months I'd say he was a good buy rather than a great one - anybody know why he left so soon after joining?

BB,

Here's a question for you, as it was before my day
icon_wink.gif
, what were the reasons for Jimmy Greaves leaving for AC Milan?

At the time, was it about money? Or purely that it was Milan and we were only Chelsea...

Cheeky git, I was only about 4 at the time!

From the various stuff I've read on the subject, although Greaves was frustrated with the Chelsea team - no matter how many goals he'd score up one end, the defence would let in just as many at the other - he didn't really want to leave the club. But Milan offered big bucks for that time (?80,000), and Chelsea got greedy and grabbed it - Greaves was transferred in June 1961 (players didn't have a lot of say in these matters back then). Manager Ted Drake left just 2 or 3 months later, and we were relegated that same season.

Greaves only stayed at Milan until December of that year, before coming back to sign for Spuds. Chelsea still had first option, apparently, but waived it!

Tommy Docherty reckons that, had he been manager at the time, he could have persuaded Greaves to stay and with him in the side we'd have dominated the 1960s.

Ifs, buts and maybes I know, but still interesting.
