Whats the lowest Chelsea following you've seen?

When I said we played "Arsenal in the afternoon" I meant reserves. Unrecognised first team matches are the Holy Grail of the football fan. How much can you remember about that match? I am sure we can still arrange a programme. As said the Häcken game was the last game in the world Chelsea would have printed a programme for, it was done by us fans 3 hours after the final whistle.

Garry, sorry mate next to no memories of it at all apart from the scoreline, but it was a full first team run out, Bill Garner scored one of ours and I watched it with my mate Billy Davies who was a gooner. If you can get a programme out of that little lot mate I'll salute you. I was just fortunate growing up where I did in that I could be in the training ground within 2-3 minutes of shutting my front door, saw a lot of the McCreadie team growing up there under Dario Gradi and Ken Shellitto, and as far as I know, Carshalton Blue could tell you for sure, it's still a big area for Chelsea support, carefree.

The old training ground at Polters Park mate? Tooting & Mitcham now play near there, shame AFC Wimbledon couldnt do a ground share there as it comes under Merton Borough.

Yeah your right mk, the area always has had & still does a large Chelsea following as does other areas nearby like, Sutton, Morden, Wallington, Cheam, Worcester Park, Epsom & Ewell to name a few.

There used to be at least three coaches go to some games from Cheam picking up lads from some of the areas i mentioned even as late as the early 00s.

It's the borderland for sure, as you say T&M's ground is in LB Merton as is the other side of the main road, but the park itself is in Carshalton and is LB Sutton, I was the lookout for the invading Mitcham hordes.

Those Cheam coaches, would that have been all the lads from the Queen Vic and that little wine bar round the corner that later became Tones.

Rose Hill always had a handy little firm as well, back in the 60s there used to be a big firm of mods from Rose Hill & any outsiders always got attacked so i've been told by uncles, some of em & their boys then ran with Chelsea.

Yeah those Cheam coaches did have a lot of the Queen Vic(now shut down) lot on em, though i used to go on them before Tones bar(also now shut) opened & it was full of local lads who ran with CFC at the time early 90s, i watched the QPR game in Cheam sports & social club yesterday which is now owned by Tone, it was as usual full of CFC dads, lads & thugs lol!

You should check out the "I grew up on the St Helier estate" page on FB mate, a few pics of Rosehill way back when, well worth a look.

It probably wasn't the lowest , and to be honest details are little sketchy , but it was West Ham at home ZDS cup. It was a poxy , but we won.

Chelsea's training ground was in Mitcham, the NAAFI Sports Ground - Poulters Park backed onto it - that area was where Mitcham, Morden and Carshalton all bordered on each other.

Easy answer to this question. 11. Eleven. Total attendence.
Well, I might just win this one. Not the total attendance but the Chelsea attendance.

In 2000 or maybe 2001 (though could be '99 or '02, who knows?) we played Vicenza away in a pre-season friendly. There were a total of 8 of us in the Chelsea section; Myself, my wife, a family of four and a bloke and his girlfriend. Now I'm pretty sure that the girfriend wasn't a Chelsea fan and nor was the wife in the family. My wife's a little iffy on this too. Although she follows them 'cos I do I'm not sure I could call her a real supporter given that she's from Huddersfield and supported United as a kid (hope she never reads this 'cos she hates me saying that). In some ways then there were 5 of us 'proper Chelsea', the father and his kids (both under ten), me and the other bloke.

Anyway, it was an evening kick off and after a superb meal in the town's piazza we found ourselves on this open terrace where, within a minute of kick off, a massive thunderstorm began and I experienced the heaviest rain I've ever seen at a football match. I decided to ignore it and show the locals (good turnout from them btw) that us Chelsea fans don't mind a bit of rain so I stood out there on my own (everyone else had retreated inside the tunnel that led to the terrace) while belting out a few 'carefrees' and some chosuses of 'Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea'. Eventually my wife, the dad and his kids joined me, the kids finding the whole thing hilarious, as did the locals as a matter of fact. Got some very bemused looks from them, most of whom seemed to have known the weather report and brought umbrellas. The rain was ridiculous, so heavy I can't really describe it. I wasn't at the Bristol City match that some talk about but I was at Oxford (1-1 mid-late Eighties) when others say it was the wettest they'd ever been at a match (it was mine too until this game) but believe me this was rain of biblical proportions and WAY worse than Oxford.

Not claiming any special kudos for this, just so happened we were on holiday there at the time, I don't make a habit of doing pre-season friendlies abroad. We were staying in Venice and took a train back after the match. The air-con was stuck full on (it being summer) and we nearly got hypothermia, both of us shivering away for the entire journey which took ages as this late night train kept stopping in the middle of nowhere. It was more uncomfortable than coming back from some God-forsaken place up north on a special when the windows had been put in. Didn't warm up until we got back to the heat and humidity of the Venetian night. It was a very funny match and experience, one I'll always remember though I can't remember the score (but pretty sure we lost). I think the rain washed away that part of my memory.

There was a write-up in the next 'Chelsea' magazine from a journo in the main stand which mentioned the family and I was a bit miffed that I was missed since I was the first one out there and 'stood my ground' the whole match. Not sure if we should count the journo as a fan or not but that still only makes 9 in total. I looked for others but couldn't see any, can't swear there weren't though. Either way a very small Chelsea attendance.

ps. I was also at the Hull FAC game some have mentioned which was also very wet and cold if I remember correctly. As has been said there were maybe 5 or 6 hundred there that day. Those that did go were treated to one of Chris Sutton's rare goals (the mate I went with is very proud of having seen all of his goals live, can't be more than 600 who can claim that) and a bloke who looked like Moses wandering around the away end. Not sure if he was Chelsea or Hull. He took some stick anyway.

  • Hull away in the FA Cup reply (although we where banned) there where not many of us there that night, Although I didn't go my mate Bones went Leicester in the Mike Stringfellow testimonal and Middlesbourugh in 1978-79 night mate 179 people on the special. Telford away in the Geoff Hurst thank you match also 1978-79 not many of us there also that night although we won 2-1

Doncaster away friendly in 85? I was living up there and there was about 20 Chelsea including Mick Greenaway there.

It was in the week before the first game back in the first division away to Arsenal with that Kerry goal.

I did Galatasaray away and the official head count in the Chelsea section was 277 even the plane out there by flight options was half empty and nearly didn't go in the first place. Loads of people dropping out even as I was driving to Gatwick and supposed to pick them up enroute.

There were some proper old Chelsea faces on that one.

Most intimidating atmosphere I've ever been to, even tanks outside the stadium.

Also did Tromso away, the Israel trip, Stavanger away which was in my opinion the best away trip I've ever been on.

My memory of times and dates is apparantly faultering......Was i at the BRIDGE in the 70s with a 9,ooo + crowd ?

Was that Coventry at home?

There were a fair amount of matches when the attendance in the then new/newish East Stand was sparse, to put it mildly, the old bill wouldn't let anyone into the North Stand, the West Stand and benches weren't exactly packed, and the vast majority of what crowd there was were in the Shed.

Loyal supporters.

And these are exactly the kind of fans that the club and Premier League football in general has been sh*tting on from a great height.

I was watching from behind the goal. To my left was my then husband, to his left Peter Nicholas and another coaching staff member. Beyond them, to my right and behind us... no-one.

To be fair, it was only a friendly! Royston Town FC v Chelsea circa 1990.

Not a home game but Sunderland away 1984-85 season ..the away game in the league after we had played them in the milk cup semi-  final..(which as we all know was fun home and away)

For the league game I can’t recall if we were banned – I think we were as I recall various coaches were stopped on route. The word at the station was plod was stopping anybody travelling but me and a couple of mates went up on a fairly deserted train. On arrival we were held under a bridge (for some reason ) –maybe 30 of us and then escorted to the ground where we were let in.

At kick off we had no more than a 100 on the terrace – when we scored about 10 went up in the seats to our left

We won 2-0 in the end – happy days

Don't panic, your memory isn't failing all that much mate. I've just consulted my Chelseasaurus, and there was just one home game where we had less than 10,000 during the 1970's...

1973/74 - 8,171 v Burnley (Div.1), 13/03/74, won 3-0

There were a few games that came close...

1974/75 - 11,048 v Coventry (Div.1), 13/11/74, drew 3-3

1975/76 - 10,254 v Hull City (Div.2), 18/02/76, drew 0-0

1978/79 - 10,682, v Derby (Div.1), 04/04/79, drew 1-1

I can't say for sure why those attendances were so low - maybe the weather was awful or maybe people couldn't afford it after a build up of fixtures in a short time - but it was most likely that Chelsea were so sh*te the fans couldn't bear to watch.

We got just under 9k for Coventry at home in 1994, just a few weeks before the Cup Final. Certainly the only time i think ive ever been in a crowd under 9k (for a first team match) at Stamford Bridge.

We lost too, as we did quite often at home to Coventry back in those days.
