Which iPod?

When it comes to things like iPod I am as savvy as an Eskimo at a country and western festival.

Until now I have been more than happy with my CD player at home, one in the motor and my record player however 18 months after moving in to where we now live I still have the majority of my CDs in a box in the garage due to lack o space in the house. I have been given £150 in vouchers to spend in a shopping hall in Glasgow (you know the sort of place - 100 hundred shops under one roof, more commonly known as a place where suicidal tendencies are high) and am considering dragging my sorry arse into the modern day and buying an ipod and speakers.

This will mean I can at least dump a load of CDs on it and put it in the living room thus not taking up all the space the CDs would.

I haven't the foggiest what the difference is between a ipod classic, ipod Nano and an ipod touch other than the interface and the fact a touch is more expensive - from the little I have read it would appear the touch is not worth the extra money and I would be better getting a cheaper model with a much bigger memory

Can anyone offer any advice?

depends on what you mainly want it for and how much of a gadget freak you are. if you just want a small player, go for the nano. if you like to fiddle and play then go for the touch. as you said, the touch does the same as a nano with a funky front end that isnt really worth the extra cash. to be honest i think a zune is a better player but not as intuitive. sticking to an ipod nano is probably your best bet though.

It would appear I can get a 16GB nano for about £145 and PC World are currently offering the home speaker kit at half price when you buy a 16 GB Nano so all in you are looking at £185 (which isn't to bad given that £150 of it isn't my cash!)

sounds pretty good but will you need the home speaker kit? your better of getting a case really as they do scratch easily. i got a nice little alarm clock with a docking station on for xmas, nothing better than waking up to new order or elbow.

as far as I know only the touch has an inbuilt speaker and that is about as good as a mobile phone speaker, you need a dock if you want to listen to it properly.

the touch is good for games, videos and the fact it has wireless internet and you can hook up to the wireless if you go in Macdonalds or wherever has it.

I think you just need an Ipod and a docking station, no video no games just as big as you can get in GB for your money.

I got my kids (3 of them) the touch for Christmas and my missus a 30 gb Ipod video but still dont know much about them.

DKW if you have any ideas I've got an Ipod that will only connect and load songs through firewire...I haven't got firewire but have tried it on someones computer who has,

no speakers and i think it can only connect via an optical connection or a jack to rca connection. but i dont see why you would to play from it at home, unless you deleted the music from your pc/cd collection. plus, the sound through the speakers on the docking stations isnt that brilliant, unless you spend a lot of money on the better bits of kit.

The idea is that I use it as my home CD player so that I can store my CDs in the garage - we just don't have the space just now to have them all in the house. If the sound quality is iffy then I may reconsider the whole idea.

That would be the obvious solution but only for someone who hasn't seen my PC!! It is falling apart and as reliable as the French. Ideally I would put the £150 toward a new PC however at the moment I can't afford to throw in the extra to get a decent one.

the sound via the speaker kits is ok, but if youre a bit picky and love your music then you will get pissed off at it, i did. there normally lacking in bass and very tinny, but if its going to be used as a supplementary to your stereo then its acceptable.

You can get docking stations that sound good but they are likely as dear as the Ipod,

I went in Costco's the other day and they had tasty looking ones that actually had valves in...they must sound good as all the old valve amplifiers sounded great.

Mods idea is a good one you could save all your music on hard drive and play it all through your computer..

pretty much what ive done. got a 500gb western digital mybook 85% full of music and films. every sunday i make an mp3 cd for the week to go in the car, drives my new wife round the bend.

if your wanting to use it primarily at home then an ipods not the way to go. has your dvd player or tv not got an optical input or usb input? with a lot of new tv`s or dvd players you can connect an external HDD directly and just play music from that. its what i do with partys.

If it's mainly for home use mate, why not get a hard drive component for your hi fi? Here's one that claims to hold 15,000 tracks...

did you decide what you were gonna do loz? ive found a few alternatives for you, mainly ones where you can stream from your pc through either your stereo or tv, or a stereo with a built in HDD (ive got one of these and its fantastic.) this one will do it to your tv http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Electronics...productId=28351

chippy, which ipod you got? ive heard theres a lot of problems with the touch and usb connection.

Haven't decided yet - the only problem is I have to spend the voucher at the shopping mall and all they have is a PC World and a Curry's (in terms of electronics) so I am restricted to what they have.

Tempted to forget the whole thing and rethink how to fit my CDs into the house (also need to get my vinyl up and running again) and spend the vouchers on something entirely different.

Get an MP3 or MP4, so much more reliable and a lot easier to use. iTunes is crap.
