Applauding an opponent

Andy Townsend got one of the worse home comings and deserved it , Kerry at Wembley the best and was one of the highlights of that great day.

I, along with most people around me, applauded the Papiss Cisse goal last season

I applauded the team we beat on aggregate 21 0 off the Bridge called (CANT THINK OF HOW TO SPELL IT IM AFRAID)...unesse hautcharge..In the cup winners cup...We beat em 8 0 and 13 0 if i remember correctly..Bunch of part timers who gave their all..One player had specs on i think

At Ibrox in both Feb 1986 and August 2011 I applauded all the Rangers  and Blues players and all the goals .

It was hard not to. As much as I hated seeing that go in the net, that was one heck of a strike by Cisse.

That's one of a very few that I've applauded. Even if it was a fluke somewhat, it was an amazing goal. Even Drogba applauded it from memory.

Zolas last game against Liverpool to be far to the bindippers the gave him a great reception. Duff jfh Zola when they all came back to the bridge they got great receptions I remember Denis wise got a great one aswell

Have never applauded an opposition player except Johan Cruyff and ex Chelsea players, never wanted to get in bad habits.

I remember applauding David Seaman after he got lobbed by Nayim from the halfway line. Ok it wasn't so much as applauding as piss taking.

"Lets all do a seaman , lets all do a seaman , la la la la"

He took it brilliant.

That said way back we were playing rubbish against some mug team and we started singing their name again as a piss take , Dixon scored straightaway and got a nice clap.

Mario Kempes at Ibrox in November 1979 for Valencia. He was outstanding that night.

I remember Cantona getting a round of appaluse at SB once. Think it was 93/4 in Hoddles first season (when we did the double over Man U). Cantona tried a outrageous volley from the half way line that ballooned off the bar and it was one of those moments in games where the whole crowd went silent. Then the fans just applauded. Its those moments for me which make football so wonderful. Sometimes you just have to admire quality. Im never that fussed if we lose to a thirty yarder or a overhead kick, its the offside and dubious goals that bug the sh*t out of me,

Turning the tables i remember Lampard getting a standing ovation at The Hawthorns in Joses first season after he ran the show in a 4-1 win and was subbed late on with an injury and ditto Zola in Galatassary during our 5-0 win there (which history has often overlooked) Welcome to Hell and all that. Pah!

I remember Paul Merson getting a clap probably at the same game. Sitting at the front of the new MHL by the near post during a corner a bloke behind me shouted out "Oi Merse!" and offered him a packet af fags, (this was soon after Merson's addiction confession). Most of the players around laughed as did Merson and all of us and it developed into a conversation about the latest scores elsewhere.

Pretty sure Zola got an ovation from the Derby fans at the Bridge when he was subbed after scoring a hat trick against them. Very few oppo fans disliked him but I still thought it was classy. Classier than me anyway as I can't imagine doing it.

You've just reminded me of that, I was there for that game it was a ridiculous shot, but summed the player up really!

I think it was the 94 95 season cantona hit the bar because we bet them in 93 94 it was my first game and I can't remember him hitting the bar I could be wrong.

Jon harley got a good reception when we played watford couple seasons back.

Joe Hart got a few claps the other week when he came to the MH for 2nd half but the got hammered after the save that was never a corner.

He got more claps than the FSW thats for sure!

i always used to applaud the oppo goalie when they jogged to our end - swiftly followed by a jeers and a appropriate hand gesture when they did a little wave of acknowlegement. I also remember Mervyn Day being mercilessly taunted about being a shirt lifter at one game,i think more for his name than actually being gay

I'm sure the Bolton team of 98 that we relegated got a standing ovation. I have the season review of that season and remember boos when Jody Morris (I think) sealed their fate.
