Applauding an opponent

I'm sure the Bolton team of 98 that we relegated got a standing ovation. I have the season review of that season and remember boos when Jody Morris (I think) sealed their fate.
If I remember correctly that was because, if they won, someone else we disliked more (Everton?) would have gone down instead. I think there were even a couple of chants of "let 'em score".

When we won promotion back to the old first division in 1977/8, I seem to recall that we sealed it with a win at home against Hull(?)

Each of our goals sparked a celebratory pitch invasion, during which a shed ender presented their goalkeeper with a bunch of flowers.

Can anyone verify this or is my mind starting to go?
I think you will find it was 1976/77 season during one of the pitch invasions at home V Hull 4-0 I think it was the invasion when the players came out Hull players where already on the pitch someone gave the Hull goalkeeper a womans handbag

The last game of 1972-73 season v Manchester United at home won 1-0 Osgood scored the Shed sang Bobby Charlton's name when he got the cigerette case from Brian Mears just before the game started, it was his last match and was supposed to retire but in the summer became Prestons player manager

We won promotion the week before with the draw at Wolves and we all came out to party at the final game with Hull. I remember the game seeming totally incidental as we waited for the end so that we could run onto the pitch

chelsea78

I seem to remember both sets of supporters at the Wolves game roundly applauding each other and even shaking hands at the end of the match. At least 5,000 Chelsea there that day even though we were supposedly banned!

And singing we all agree Chelsea and wolves are magic or something like that

My memories, both home and away, was that we nearly always clapped as the opposition keeper aproached the goal, be it shed end or the away end of which ever ground we were massed.
Yep, that was something that certainly happened almost every time I was in the Shed especially in the 80’s and every opposition keeper bar none acknowledged our applause.

I remember a game in the 80's against Shrewsbury, Big Doug was playing for them. Their Keeper had an absolute blinder even though he conceeded two or three.

He got a massive round of applause as he came to the shed end for the second half. and just before the end of the game his name was chanted by the home fans.

Remember the amateurs of ( sorry cant rem how its spelt)...jeunesse hautcharge getting a round of applause after being killed 13 0 at the Bridge

It's pretty common in non-league games, Dulwich Hamlet in my case.  Standing behind the goal Dulwich are attacking the keeper will face all sorts of abuse be it fat, ex-player, ginger, etc but most times if he's had a good game he'll get a good few compliments at the end whatever the result.  Normally the goalie will return the compliment (hats off to the Billericay Town one last weekend, however Hamlets' support is exceptional these days) but there have been the odd see you in the bar or car park comments over the years.

And the funniest memory of that night for me is, Chelsea being booed of at half time for ONLY being 6-0 up

i went to a few Nottingham Forest games and always remember Peter Shilton given a warm reception by us fans ...

On the other side of the coin I went to Stockholm to see England grind out a 0-0 draw in a crucial WC qualifier (I think it was the game Butcher had blood all down his shirt).  Anyway Shilton's being interviewed after the match and most of the England fans were chanting "Tina, Tina" who i think is the name of the brass he was caugh with a few years earlier.  Poor form I reckon, I was never big on booing England players unless they were Spurs!

I seem to remember my dad (who worked on the turnstiles) coming home early because it was was such a boring match, being so dominant!  I remember not understanding how watching Chelsea banging in goals could be boring!
