BBC Reporting

You asked why the "lefties" don't want it to be a subscription

I explained why that wouldnt work because the BBC as we know it would collapse.

You asked me the same question.

Do you want me to give the same answer again?
Dunno why people think the BBC is something to do with the left wing . The last Chairman was a top Conservation and close friend of Boris. Had to resign over some undisclosed loans.

The new one ....

Anti-woke’ race relations veteran Samir Shah appointed new BBC chairmanThe television executive and co-author of the 2021 Sewell Report has previously spoken out against positive discrimination

I hear that sometimes from far-right types who are annoyed it doesn't represent their views, which is kind of the point.

Which is fine as an opinion. I think it's mental personally.

I think it'll be a shame if we replace the BBC with Netflix and Amazon. I don't know why people want our media controlled by Americans.

But it seems inevitable sadly.
I think the reason that people would like the media controlled by Americans as you suggest is that they do not enjoy what they see as poor programming ( sport has been mentioned as an example previously). They also are not impressed with a compulsory and to what some see as a high charge, and they dont wish to be contributing to the salaries in any way of people of questionable character. Its very sad not that it will die but that they will not change.

The BBC has been all but replaced by these services that you mention. Very few and reducing numbers are watching the BBC. They are not relevant to the viewing public. They are sleepwalking into extinction. We could pray for their survival but it will not happen.

They are almost a dead parrot, no more, gone to meet their maker.

Debates about which political position the BBC are taking and or whining about Amazon and Netflix etc will not keep the BBC running only change would do that.

Netflix has been accused of tax avoidance in the UK by funneling profits through low-tax jurisdictions like the Netherlands, despite receiving tax relief for producing content in the UK.

Aren't the BBC TV channels combined figures still higher than Streamers ? Our taxes subsidised Elon Musk's electric vehicles few years ago , no one seemed bothered . Our taxes subsidise loads of stuff that I don't want it to , Like the licence fee tax it is forced on us, but the BBC seems to get all the heat . Now our taxes are about to be used to reduce each electric vehicle by £1,500. It won't help me to buy one though..

I don't disagree that we should have a choice about the BBC licence fee, which is an enforced tax , even if we don't have choices about other uses of our taxes.

The poor programming content, the lack of relevance and suchlike is the deathblow, they will not change but choose to highlight very interesting issues like this.

Many will continue to pay and hardly use the services until they finally expire. hey ho.

These comments be it Tax, alternative platforms or political positioning are very valid reasons not to be too hard on the poor old BBC but it wont save them.

If their viewing figures are so good why is this debate continuing, the future is bright lets increase the licence fee.

Politely, on this one, does anyone actually like really care about companies avoiding tax? It’s the same as Joe Bloggs being registered as a Limited Company and only ‘officially’ takkng £12,750 a year wage but recieving the rest through dividends.

Always seems to be one of those faux outrage situations like bankers bonuses that just comes from a place of pure envy.

Personally I would ringfence x amount for the next 10 years to come from the govt budget and reduce the licence fee significantly for anyone earning under 100k. And that total budget I would suggest should be 50% higher than it is now. Make the bbc competitive again.

I'd then make it an independent panel to decide on the bbc budget for the future and that same independent of bbc panel to be responsible for selling advertisements (perhaps 1 minute per 15 minutes).

But genuinely those ideas would be shot down by the capitalists who want the bbc to fail so that they can make profits on our media habits.

I know, fancy being unhappy about some mega corporation avoiding paying their dues into a country, therefore depriving that country of much needed funding that goes towards schooling, health, policing and a thousand other necessities.....such faux anger....

10% of something is better than a 100% of nothing. We have one of the highest tax rates in the developed world and then wonder why a lack of companies/ the brightest in their fields never choose to set up or work here.

Simple solutions but we as a country are just greedy and have to keep covering the costs for issues that aren’t our own.

Tbf that Joe blogs has to pay 20% tax on profits and then another relatively high tax tax on dividends. Ltd directors pay a similar amount of tax now to PAYE

No we dont, not even close to the highest tax rates, I dont think were even in the top 10 in Europe, let alone the world.

He's full of sh*t. Speaking from personal experience, having lived in both countries, the personal tax burden in the UK is quite a lot lower than in Germany. I understand overall corporate tax is also higher in Germany.

Ive done work in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Tax rates over there are eye watering, its why wages are so high, cost of living is so high etc.

Well *uck my boots well done the BBC

Hallelujah! That's more like it👍

And don't forget the beer prices... Taxes are quite high in Germany but a bottle of beer costs about the same as a bottle of water. One of many reasons it's a good country to live in.

I spent a long weekend traveling around the black forest are on trains years ago, my girlfriend was working in Ravensburg. We just basically stopped at Towns, went to pubs a weekend. The beer was incredible, no hangover etc.

That'll probably be the German "Reinheitsgebot" (purity requirement), which mandates that beer should only contain barley, water, hops, yeast and nothing else. So none of the nasty additives that (probably) make hangovers worse. It's hard to get "bad" beer here, but if I'm honest, I do miss some some of the British and craft beer varieties that are harder to find here.

Go to Germany and you'll see the benefits of your high tax. Clean streets, trains that cost pennies to cross the country, £3 pints etc.

You pay your tax here and my local community park hasn't had the grass cut for two summers now and i've lost count of the amount of pot holes within half a mile of my house. Not to mention the inability to get a doctors appointment without private healthcare.
