Boro rivalry

I remember Chelsea taking the Holgate End back in the 70's, but have no idea which season it was. The only time I ever saw a Boro mob at the Bridge was the play-off game, and they were very lucky there was a fence to protect them. Having said that, Boro had a half-decent mob, though they did tend to throw darts at away fans which was pretty cowardly in my opinion.

We've never really had a rivalry with them though, not sure how a southern team can have a rivalry with a northern one. Apart from West Ham & the Geordies, but that was based on one incident involving a petrol bomb. Our rivals have always been Tottenham and West Ham, and to a lesser extent, Arsenal. QPR and Fulham like to think they're our rivals, but that's a bit like Hartlepool or York City claiming to be Boro's rivals
Would you not class Leeds as a northern rival.?

During the 'hooligan years' we have had little spats of rivalry (at various times) with all 3 of the main NE Clubs, Newcastle, Sunderland & Boro. And probably in that order too?

I think it's fair to say that Boro were late starters on the hooligan front. They certainly peaked during the latter years.
I also think it's fair to say that our turn-outs (& occasional excursions) 'op North have generated more excitement with the locals than anything reciprocated back at the Bridge. Several trips to Sunderland immediately spring to mind :O)

I went to lots of home games against the NE Clubs, over many years. Boro's turn-out, for the play-off game 'stood out'. However, by this time (off the pitch) the police had the surrounding streets pretty much sewn up.
I've never regarded the NE Clubs as true rivals, that's 100% reserved for Tottenham & the likes! However, from personal memory due to various promotions/relegations, etc. I'd say Newcastle fixtures, both home & away were perhaps the most anticipated!

F*ck me, some of those posts on there are comical - nearly as bad as the West Ham "we won every fight we ever had since nursery' ICF, pretty pathetic.
Just read their site, typical of most clubs cannot take the truth, excuse after excuse eg most of the Boro boys where in the pub at 2.20 when Chelsea took our end!  One thing is they have never shown their faces at Chelsea one even talks about the 74-75 season when a few where in the East End

i like the donkey jacket bit. I presume they mean more Lacoste and Lois..Never saw a Boro mob only at the ZDS and as all northeners ,backed off when it got naughty.

Loads of Boro say the best firm ever to go to theirs was Chelsea in the 70s/ early 80s, tho our turn out up there in the play offs in 88 wasnt great for whatever reason, Boro in the return game had a mob of 800 odd & is said to be one of the best northern mobs to come to Chelsea, then again most clubs would bring a big following/firm for a promotion game its a shame they never bought much of a firm at normal league games at sb,  they got turned over in the ZDS final in 90 with 100s of Chelsea baying for Boro blood.

Rivals nah but because of the play offs & ag that day the fixture stood out for a while amongst some of our lot.

The play offs was a one off, Boro did take a huge crew down, unchallenged, but the points about a few Chelsea taking the Holgate in the 70's were valid, the lads were still in the pubs at 2:10pm, as you would expect , and the challenge was left to a few teenagers who were in the Holgate early that day, I know, I was there in the ground, though not in the Holgate, that was the classic 7-2 game,

Never ever considered Boro as any sort of rival, the only time I can remember any Boro presence at the Bridge was that stupid play off final.

We did play Boro in 3 Wembley finals in a short space of time so a short history of rivalry in those finals.

Cant remember any of Boros fans being up for it around Wembley or the areas I was in.

The match when the Holgate End was taken was the 2-7 match 1978-79 we where in the corner opposite which was terrace next to the seats and my mate Paul Feeney was talking to a Boro girl who said to him that no one has ever taken the Holgate End and at that moment Hicky and his mob cleared the end and Chelsea was written on the wall at the back of the end, PF said to her it has now!
The Holgate was 'taken ' in 78 and in early 80s .. Hickey was not involved in either . 78 was a coach load led by the fair haired Hounslow bod and early 80s was half caste D's firm.

They certainly weren't walking around the vicinity of SB as I saw them come out of the station with an escort while I was waiting with for my mate by the town hall.

I had some mates who were Boro fans and they came down by coach for the ZDS final. Supposedly there were quite a few fisticuffs in the coach park after the game. Somehow a couple of Chelsea fans ended up on their coach going back to the North East. They were given a few punches and held down at the back of the coach for most of the journey before they were finally kicked off the coach near Middlebrough. Must have been a long journey back for those poor fans.

Newcastle have (imo) always had the best mobs at the Bridge out of the trio.....I well remember watching in awe as geordies and Northstand boys mixed it for a considerable amount of time in the NS...Cozzers found it hard to quell....Where ive been to Newcastle and sunderland i havent been to Boro so cant comment......I understand they have a small but good crew to fall upon nowadays..

There mob got ruined on wembley way afters .

Remember the play off final, was drinking in the Golden Lion? Just off North End Road, when stuck in traffic a coach load of Boro appear and literally the whole pub empties and put through every window.5 minutes later, same thing happens again before old bill turn up and restore order. There was a Tottenham bloke I know that was there that day and he was well impressed with what he saw & heard
