Credit to Wayne Rooney who will win his 100th cap against Slovenia at Wembley .

Easily the most 'talented' player to have played for England during my time as a spectator although I'm too young to have watched Gazza etc. 

Has been brilliant at times but has failed to shine at major tournaments since Euro 2004 .. still only 29 though

I had hoped we would sign him last Summer but looking back on it now I'm glad we didn't .

Congratulations Wayne on your 100th cap - divisive figure but a great player

The only option for a long time? what about defoe?, as i said the other day, his scoring record is atrocious, against the best teams in the world, only scored 1 goal against a top ten ranked side in a competitive match, Uruguay 2014 world cup, like Beckham way over rated. Would have been dropped playing for any other major country. goalscorers are meant to score goals.

 
Is Rooney the best English attacking player of his generation? Well compared to Crouch, Defoe, Heskey and Carroll you'd have to say yes.

Is he the best English player of the last decade? No chance, JT and Ash have been among the best in the world for virtually their entire careers in their positions.

Congratulations to him either way, if not for him Peter Crouch would probably be the one celebrating his 100th cap *shudder*

I think so yes. I think he's a decent player who has shown moments of brilliance. I don't think he's nearly as good as the English media tell us though. That said you don't get 100 caps for being crap - I'm testament to that!

us it wrong that I agree with that last sentence but find it quite sad. He hasn't gotten anywhere near to fulfilling his early potential, and if those 100 caps I can only remember a handful where he was outstanding.
 
Same old story with England players, never really transferred his club form over to the national team.

No doubt a great servant to the team but has never delivered at the finals.

He will probably break the scoring record but considering the number of meaningless friendlies and the bloated qualifying stages is that really a surprise?

If the likes of Charlton and Lineker had routinely played San Marino twice a year I suspect they would have put up bigger numbers.

 
Is 100 caps an achievement anymore? England play a lot more matches these days,be it group fixtures in the World Cup and Euros over bloated by the break up of the Eastern Europe or the pointless friendlies. His peers(Wright,Charlton,Moore),achieved this landmark with fewer internationals played over a season and in some cases before the advent of substitutions had to put in a full 90mins,so no token caps for them for a three minute appearance. Rooney has held that position solely as he has been the only English striker of any note since Shearer but hasn't really kicked on to the next level that was expected of him as a young lad when he got his first cap.

He's been amongst the best players for England in recent years. That's a reflection sadly on the very average England team of recent years.

100 caps is still a notable achievement but there are former England players with fewer caps who were much better than Rooney.

 
Wayne Rooney isn't an English great but he's been very good. He has a ratio of almost a goal every other game which is really good for international football. Also, you always hear the typical "he doesn't do it in tournaments". You only have to look at the stats for other "greats" to find out that Rooney actually holds is own, at the very least amongst them.

Charlton didn't play San Marino, but he did play against United States twice (8-1 and 10-0, 1 goal and a hat-trick), Luxembourg (9-0, hat-trick), Mexico (8-0, hat-trick), Switzerland (8-1, hat-trick). Games were just far high scoring back then due to 2-3-5 and none of the games I just mentioned were in tournaments. All bar one which was qualifying, were friendlies. In fact, 4 out of Charlton's 49 goals were in major tournaments, a percentage of less than 10. 6 of Rooney's 43 goals were in tournaments, a percentage far higher. Rooney has only scored in a game where England scored 5 or more twice, whereas Charlton did it a huge 9 times. The argument "Rooney has played against San Marino" just isn't valid.

The same can be said for other England greats. Lineker scored 6 in major tournaments and scored in 4 games with England scoring 5 or more. Greaves scored 4 in tournaments out of 44, less than 10%, and scored 6 in games with England scoring 5 or more.

Wayne Rooney isn't a great but his stats are really good and the fact he has played against San Marino doesn't even cancel out the high scoring games in generations before which rarely happen now.

 
Congratulations to him, there can't be many 29-year-olds who can boast 100 caps for a "top" international side.

Rooney is a truly world-class player on his day, I remember him tearing Croatia apart at Euro 2004, it is just a shame he hasn't been able to maintain that form consistently throughout his career (not that much of a shame I suppose considering he plays for Man Utd) or he would unquestionably be one of England's greatest players. He is both an intelligent footballer (if not an intelligent person) and a technically-gifted one; England don't produce players like Rooney very often. I hope he can step it up as captain.

He probably is as thick as two short planks. However, he's a footballer and probably one of the most intelligent, football wise, of his generation. His positioning is usually first class. You don't get to be as good a player as he is, without real pace and without the ability to run past people, without having a footballing brain to make up for it. Lampard is the same.I suspect most of the ire aimed at Rooney is because he doesn't play for the team the person supports, rather than a pragmatic view of him.

I know we play more international games now, but getting to 100 caps is still a great achievement. He has had to be at a top level for 11 consecutive years to reach that milestone at such a young age. He hasn't earned any of these caps past his sell by date, unlike Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard.

Getting 100 caps now is equivalent to the 76 of Tom Finney.

This is supposed to be a friendly forum I thought. A forum as in people share views and opinions and debate them. Without being rude. Seems that is lost on some.
