This is supposed to be a friendly forum I thought. A forum as in people share views and opinions and debate them. Without being rude. Seems that is lost on some.

You don't? The answer, quite simply, is whatever you like. Following on from a request not to take things so seriously, I would have thought it was apparent that there was no unfriendliness inferred.

I've got to be a little bit careful here, because this could easily blow up, and there really is no need.

Your initial response struck me as so dry, and so unnecessarily serious in tone, that I thought a timely reminder not to take things so seriously was in order. I originally wrote "don't take me, or yourself so seriously," but edited that to read don't take "it" so seriously, thinking you might just take "or yourself" the wrong way. How ironic is that?

If you want to talk about Wayne Rooney's positive qualities, then go ahead. Well no. For years Wayne Rooney was touted as "The Great White Hope" (to use the old boxing phrase) of Englsh football. Many in the media were desperate for him to succeed, repeatedly describing him as a truly world class player, they'd have you believe that he was up there with the best. Now on his day, Wayne Rooney may be a very good player, but world class? Not on your life. Not in my opinion, hence massively overrated.

The team the person supports. How dry, how impersonal can you get? in the same sentence you cite the "ire" aimed at Rooney. By whom exactly? Looking at the entire thread I see no sign of any anger whatsoever. You quote me again:

Which is as clear an implicartion that you thought I was being "rude" as you could wish for, If you start dropping implications of rudeness, or of ire/anger where none exists, from that point on, it's very, very easy for things to blow up.

He probably is as thick as two short planks. However, he's a footballer and probably one of the most intelligent, football wise, of his generation. His positioning is usually first class. You don't get to be as good a player as he is, without real pace and without the ability to run past people, without having a footballing brain to make up for it. Lampard is the same.

To be honest I don't think Rooney has ever been a world-class player, not for United and certainly not for England. He had the potential but for one reason or another he never quite realised it to the full. He had his peak during the season where we won the Double, he pretty much carried that United side playing up front on his own and scored 34 goals in total. I though he'd kick on from there, but his game stagnated and has now been on the decline for a few years. 

100 caps is still an achievement, however you look at it. But he'd be pretty low on my list of top, consistent performers in the England team over the last 10 or so years.

As far as this being a Chelsea forum then I'm not sure what point you are making. Just because I support Chelsea does not automatically make me see other players with that fact in mind. I'm a football fan, I like the game and I like to be neutral when I have an opinion on any player. That's being pragmatic - what's the problem with that ?

I usually ignore whatever the moron says, but Rio said recently that Rooney was better than Ronaldo when he first joined United, despite joining a year later than Cristiano.

Really goes to show that hard work pays off, if Rooney had put in the same effort as Ronaldo into making himself an elite athlete he really could have been an all time great.

But "you know what you can do with your pragmatism"? Any 'rudeness' there is in your own mind. As I told you when you asked what I meant, the answer was: "whatever you want". If you want to take that away with you and make of if something to get offended about, that's your problem.

Rooney gets a lot of flack from fans and it's understandable when you consider some of his behaviour in an England shirt.

But on a talent level and performance level, he is deserving of his 100 caps. It's easy to point at his poor goal tally at major tournaments, but let's say you swapped Rooney for Thomas Mueller or Miroslav Klose, I would be pretty sure that Rooney would have scored roughly the same number of goals as those two have.

My point is that it's system based on how many a striker scores. Rooney has been disappointing in tournaments, but the team around him has collapsed around him either being too conservative or in the last World Cup having no system at all.

Out of the 4 recent 100 cappers for England (Cole, Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard), Rooney had the second best international career after Cole.

yeh i know the fat  c**t missed out by a whole 2 days! in 2009 his last goal for england was on the 9th sep he didn't score for england again til the 7th september 2010, which also encaapsulated 2010 in south africa!
