England Euro 2012 Squad

Gotta love our press, don't ask relevant questions like how Stewart Downing somehow made the squad, just keep bringing up Terry and Rio.

great decision, he's sh*te and doesn't deserve a place. Good on you Roy.

Shame he balances out such a great decision by including so many of the dippers though. Henderson on stand by too, god forbid any injuries!

I don't have too much of a problem with that squad. One or two players I wouldn't have and, of course, I don't like Gerrard as captain, but over all I think it's as good as we could have done, injuries aside.

I would imagine that we'd start with

Hart

Johnson, Cahill, Terry, Cole

Parker Lampard

Walcott Gerrard Young

Carroll

I also thought Roy did well in his press conference. Handled the Terry/Rio questions well. Made it quite clear that he preferred JT as a player to Ferdinand - rightly so.

Not really surprised that Gerrard is the captain, even if I don't like it. He has been 2nd or 3rd choice for it for many years and I can see why Hodgson didn't dare to make Terry captain. Taking him and axing Ferdinand was "bad enough", to go and make him captain as well would make the media crazy and more or less everyone who isn't supporting Chelsea go mad.

As for having Carroll I really have no problem with that. We've laughed at him at times, sure, but just look at the impact he had against us. He seem to be on form at the moment so he can probably do some good for the team. Makes the team stronger in the air as well. Hopefully Downing can start producing some assists now.

Hilarious seeing Downing make the squad, what has he actually does to warrant a call up? He didn't score all season, he didn't get any assists, what advantage could he possibly bring to the England squad?

Gerrard captain as well, brilliant. Isn't England's record when he's been captain absolutely dire?

The most valuable player to England is definitely Downing.

Can really use his zero goals and zero assists.

I'm not sure why Hodgson didn't name a preliminary squad involving 30 players, had a look at each and every one of them, and then whittled things down to 23 after a week. That way he could weed out the charlatans like Downing and Carroll and give better players like Adam Johnson and Graham Holt a look.

A very mediocre squad. The only upside is that this tempers expectations. The hype train is usually roaring by now. Maybe the fact that it's only whimpering along will actually help out the team during the tournament.

Micah Richards , Adam Johnson , Michael Carrick and Dan Sturridge all left out..........what ?

Now who is going to get the goals ? because the only goalscorers in that team are Lampard , Gerrard , Rooney and Defoe ( if he is on his game ) Johnson and Sturridge would be great for the team , especially coming off the bench . What the hell has Downing , Glen Johnson , James Milner and Robert Green done this season that warrants a place in the England team ? I could have picked a better squad.

Here is what mine would be.

GK

Joe Hart , Ben Foster , John Ruddy

DF

JT , Gary Cahill , Joleon Lescott , Phil Jagielka , Ashley Cole , Leigton Baines , Micah Richards , Phil Jones.

MF

Lamps , Gerrard , Scott Parker , Adam Johnson , Ashley Young , Michael Carrick , Alex Oxlade-Chamberlaine , Theo Walcott.

ST

Rooney , Welbeck , Sturridge , Defoe.

Now that is a better team then what was picked .

DOWNING AND JOHNSON WHAT THE HELL

Overall, that squad is typical of previous England squads - it doesn't matter how well you've played, it's all about favourites, whether players and/or clubs. How else can the likes of Downing, Rooney, Defoe, Green, Johnson, Jones & Welbeck get selected?

Can't believe he's taking Rooney for just one game. The c*nt needs to be suspended from playing for England, just might make the ugly little granny-shagging turd realise he's got to behave when in an England shirt - but then of course, he's too thick to think.

Knew he didn't have a chance but feel bad for Holt not making it.

I wonder how Sturridge is going to react to this. If he gets on the field on Saturday, he might have something to prove, but that could end up with him trying to do too much, as usual. I also wonder if him missing out will force his hand into leaving the club sooner rather than later, in search of somewhere where he is the first-choice striker. Missing out on a major tourney should make him reconsider his game and realize he still has to work on a lot, but I guess we will have to wait and see if it actually does.

Maybe he's picked Glen Johnson and Downing to try and make it up to the Liverpool fans for being crap as manager? They certainly don't deserve it on performances.

Don't really think the FA would have allowed him to make Terry captain, considering they were the ones who took the armband off him and sacked Capello for disagreeing...

Re Carroll: he's had a good couple of games, and whilst making fun of him I've always thought him capable of the performances he put in at the end of the FA cup final, but two games is hardly enough merit to take him to the tournament on. Hopefully he'll just be on the bench.

As much as we all hate him, he's our best player, and the only world class player in his prime that we currently have. No way we should have omitted him.

I guess Hodgson sees Downing's season as a blip or something, AJ hasn't had a great season either, his butt imprint on the City bench is looking pretty good though.

Think Sturridge should have made it ahead of Defoe at least (and he's certainly better than Welbeck) but his performances tailing off have cost him, I guess, whilst Welbeck has continued to play games

England's best player??? He's a half-decent club player, but has done next to nothing for his country

Sturridge has been crap for the last few months, but Welbeck & Defoe have hardly done better. Grant Holt deserves a place ahead of all of them, but that was never gonna happen.

Duran Duran to sing England's Euro 2012 song

''..."His name is Rio and he watches from the stand''

John Ruddy has been ruled out of the tournament after breaking a finger in training. Not exactly a massive blow to the squad but a shame for him after having such a fine season with Norwich and breaking into the squad against most expectations.

Poor bloke, was happy that he got a well-deserved callup after a good season. What does it say about Ross Turnbull that they're looking at League Two before they look at him?
