England World Cup Squad

The Liverpool lads will be involved, so as much as it pains me to say it, you have to build the team around them, given that they are already used to playing with each other etc. That's a massively important aspect imo, as there simply isn't enough time for the international players to play together and get used to each others style of play and such. This would be my team:

The fact we have to play Johnson saddens me, he's a massive liability. As long as Gerrard is told to play like at Liverpool and sit deep and NOT be captain fantastic charging around everywhere leaving gaps in our midfield we will be OK there.

Never mind the team, have we got  a World cup song coming out ?

Against Italy/ Uruguay and potential knockout round opponents

Hart

Cole

Cahill

Jagielka

Jones

Carrick/Barry

Gerrard

Henderson

Milner

Sturridge

Rooney

Against Costa Rica and a potential weak last 16 side:

Hart

Baines

Cahill

Jagielka

Johnson

Gerrard

Henderson

Sterling

Lallana

Oxlade Chamberlain

Sturridge

My set up is obvious. The most solid defensive team against the good teams. It should get 4 points (at least 3) in the opening two games.

Then against weaker teams we need pace and creativity not so much defensive work rate.

No point taking a 23 man squad if it's not going to be utilised.

True about Johnson. Weakens the side.

I think Micah Richards was probably England's best right back after Neville vacated the spot. Shame with all his injury problems. Good player.

Barkley Lampard Milner Lallana Henderson in, according to twitter. No Carrick/Cleverley either.

Shame Cole won't be going. Shaw going doesn't fill me the best of confidence; in fact I think Gibbs would be a better option.

edit: this is rumored to be the full squad

Hart, Foster, Ruddy

Johnson, Jones, Cahill, Jagielka, Smalling, Baines, Shaw
Henderson, Lallana, Gerrard, Wilshere, Lampard, Oxlade Chamberlain, Milner, Sterling, Barkley
Sturridge, Rooney, Welbeck, Lambert

If that's the squad then that defence worries me massively. Johnson is terrible, baines great going forward, awful 1 v 1, smalling and Jones are just average.

Gutted for Ash still by far and away the best left back England have ever had. Woy is a complete f**k wit.

The newspapers pick the England squads in the modern day. Criminal that Ashley isn't going to the world cup. I honestly think Ashley would be a better Right back than Glen Johnson (maybe I'm wearing blue tinted glasses)

How England selects the squad is all wrong. Compare to Spain and Germany who try and build a core squad of 18 with 8 players fighting for the remaining 5 players. Also they have a starting team which is pretty much decided and not disrupted for to the flavour of the month.

The way we've built for this World Cup is terrible. Hodgson (who I strongly defend) has no idea of his best squad or the team that works. But his hands are also tied by the media constantly fawning over players.

No real surprises for me in that squad, I think we'll regret bringing Lambert over Carroll though.

You can't blame hodgson for leaving cole out, he's hardly played. The defence looks sh*t though, I dont see what anyone see's in Johnson, he's terrible in defence and although he gets forwards he constantly f**ks it up in the final third

I think you can blame Roy for leaving Ash out.  We've seen in recent weeks that he is still the best left back in England.  Baines is the big mistake.  Vastly over rated at the highest level and will be found wanting against top teams.  Shaw is a great prospect but not ready to play in a world cup yet.

I agree that defensively we look very weak.  Ball retention is a big issue and neither Cahill nor Jagielka is going to help that.  Not that there are a lot of options.

Midfield looks weak too.  Gerrard in the Pirlo role will be a disaster. Defensively, Liverpool were shocking with him holding.

Upfront we have one proper striker and I'm still not absolutely sure about him.

So, overall, I'm not too optimistic!! lol.

For what it's worth I'd line up as follows - selecting from the predicted squad

Hart

Johnson

Cahill

Jagielka

Baines

Gerrard

Wilshire

Sterling

Rooney

Lallana

Sturridge

Actually I just noticed that Barry isn't in that rumored squad, that for me is ridiculous, he's easily the best defensive midfielder we have, a combo of Gerrard/Henderson/Wilshere/Lampard is going to leak goals for fun against any strong team we come up against, including Italy and Uruguay.

Support for England has gone down after cole being left out. I understand the decision to want to go for youth but it has to be throughout the whole team, why are Gerrard, Milner, Lampard, lambart and for that matter Baines going? These players aren't going to be at the next World Cup, probably not the euros.

Baines is clearly first choice and shaw is hardley gonna play. If we somehow got to the final (or any important game) winning 1-0 with 30 minutes to go and Baines gets injured, who woul you want coming in? Cole would be perfect and has shown that he can come in after not playing loads and still be class.

As for right backs I'd take one of clyne or chambers instead of smalling, either that or take cole shaw and Baines and if the unlikely happens and we need to change right back they can shuffle over.

Squad looks decent going forward though, just at the back is very weak

Surprised Walker isn't in the squad, he's been one of Spurs best players and has had a better season than Johnson.
