England World Cup Squad

Options have nothing to do with it, I'm not sure what your saying there. He's abysmal for both England and Liverpool, gets caught out of position continually, bombs on and just pisses about with it, then turns round and loses it so he has to lumber back. We must be the only national side that has to play a defensive minded midfielder in front of a right back because of his inadequacies. The fact we have no one to compete with him is a disgrace.

This England defence will be ripped apart by pace and direct play, especially if there's no cover from the midfield. Did someone really just say Johnson plays better for England that Liverpool? Maybe true, but he's still absolute garbage and a liability for england.
Well let's face it, he couldn't be worse! He couldn't defend when he was here and he still can't defend now. He was at fault for all three of Palace's goals the other week.

Only a few seasons ago CB was one of our strongest positions, now it's one of our weakest. Apart from Cahill the rest just ain't that good.
Well, still could have had Cahill - Terry pairing and that would be the best duo in the WC if ...

Masters of our own downfall.

No, out of the options that can play RB (Smalling, Jones) and have been selected, he's the best one. People see this as a negative that he's picked because of a lot of his poor Liverpool performances but he actually does quite well for England in comparison. Wouldn't go as far to call him a liability.

There has been a problem with RBs in England for ages now. But there's no-one really better than him at the moment so not sure why I've seen so many complaints?

With Liverpool, both the full backs can go berserk with darting runs which leave acres of space behind them - probably one of the reasons why the midfielders get so much time on the ball. Rodgers allows that. Not like that with England though; I don't think Roy would want that & with more leaders in the team he'd be better instructed on what to do and won't venture as much. I think he'll be a lot better defensively.

Hahahaha good one!
No idea why people say stuff like this. Too late to have him build a partnership with Cahill I guess now but like I said, he's a good player when at CB and if Jagielka were to get injured I would have no problem with him being there. Perhaps watch some more United games?  :good2:

Are you one of those who looked at some games where he's played as a RB & then judged him?

Smalling has done very little to convince me he's a decent centre back, and he's never been a right back. I would much rather we had taken someone like Curtis Davis who has been superb this season.

Not sure you can really build a cb pairing if you don't play at the same club. There's a difference between what you've said, I wouldn't be too gutted having him as a replacement but having him ahead of jagielka is mental.

Actually united are probably the team I've seen second most of over the last ten years, my mate supports them and were often down the pub watching the games. Neither of us think much of him either cb or rb and he watches every game. If he couldn't play rb as well I wouldn't take him, same for Jones, the only reason they are going is because they are versatile, Stones and Flanagan have been better this season and are in better form.

I'm talking about England. Cahill/Jagielka have played most of the friendlies & qualifiers together so must've build some kind of understanding with one another.

Well I can just go & say I know many who rate him as their best CB. Moyes has rotated their defence so much though and he's been forced to play RB a lot of times where he's been quite poor. But he's a reliable footballer I feel, as well as being good at defending he's intelligent, good reader of the game.

Jagielka has never been good enough for England's aspiration that why he's only just getting into the team and has spent his entire career at Everton. He's not good enough and at 31 years of age (will be close to 32 in the WC) never will be. I doubt you'll even get more than 1 tournament out of him. Then who are you going to replace him with? Unless someone comes out of the woodwork, Jones or Smalling, and based on current ability that is Smalling at CB. Playing tournament to tournament has been one of the biggest criticism of England's selection policy. If Jag was 26 or 27 then fine. Although tbf I wouldn't be averse to the likes of, say Caulker, there either instead of Smalling.

Yes Flan has better as a fullback. I disagree on stones though. Don't think he's anywhere near ready.

So many good LB's available compared to RB.  Hodgson should have taken notes regarding what Mourinho did with Dave

Henderson's shirt looks 3 sizes too small :).

Why do they all look so bloody miserable.
Cahill, Milner and Lambert look particularly BAD, Rooney looks like the a love child of Jason Statham and Dominic Monaghan, and Baines (he does always looks this way though), looks like he should be in a Brit-Pop Band.

Yeah I meant about England too, you can build some sort of relationship but not great because you go months at times without playing with one another. But like you say Cahill and jagielka would have the best relationship anyway, so surely better to play those two?

He may well be the best Man U have, he may also for some people be better for England than Jagielka, but for me that says a lot more about how sh*t both of their defensive options are. I've never said he's terrible by the way, just not a big fan.

I agree stones probably isn't ready but he came into Everton and looked very comfortable so you never know, caulker and Davies are probably higher on my list than Smalling too. I don't think he's there on merit, I think he's there because of his versatility, which I can understand, but never a starter for me.

On a side note, I'm American, but I think that this squad looks better than some of the past English WC teams.  I think Jay Rodriguez would have been a better choice than Lambert, if he hadn't gotten injured.

GK: Hart

LB: Shaw
CB: Cahill
CB: Jagelika
RB: Baines

MF Barkley / Henderson
MF: Gerrard

AM: Lallana / Sterling
AM: Milner

FW: Rooney

ST: Sturridge

We don't have a single proper holding midfielder, why is Gareth Barry not even on the standby?

I can already tell that we're going to start with a Gerrard - Henderson CM pairing and get ripped apart by pretty much everyone.

A JT - Cahill pairing with Barry just in front of them and with Ash at left back would make me quietly confident that we could contain most teams, unfortunately 3 of them aren't there.

I was watching SSN last night, and it said that the England squad was short of fullbacks.

Hey Roy, we know someone who can fill in.  Just sayin'. I think Ashley has his number.

Defoe says he is devastated not to be going to the world cup.

Uh, sorry mate but you shouldn't have gone to play your football in a league that is possibly weaker than the Championship.

Just because you have been involved in past squads it doesn't mean you should be in the world cup squad. He had a sh*t half season at Tottenham and now he is has just started a new season with Toronto, what has he done that warrants a place in the world cup squad ?

After watching the 1st half of the fa cup final I'm even more convinced Curtis Davis should be going over smalling.
