Levi Colwill

We see how the RCB acts when we are on the ball. That needs to be James.

Saw Josh in Arsenal’s box on several occasions.

 
Colwill is really struggling. His positioning is all over the shop. It's like he's suddenly turned into David Luiz. He needs to snap out of it quickly.

I don't understand why he didn't try and close the space for the 3rd goal. When Acheampong failed to win the ball, it knocked him off balance, Colwill should have covered his space but he's just jogging back. If he reacts and tries to cover Acheampong's space, it would allow Acheampong to recover and take up Colwill's space, which would have give us a much better chance to prevent the goal

Colwill is blocking the ball across goal, as he rightly should. This goal is 100% on Lacroix letting his man run past him for the cut back.

I think Colwill probably felt that gap was too big to close down quickly enough. In this instance, unlike several others last night, I don't have any problem with his positioning. But at no point does he check behind himself to see where the Leeds players are and to work out where the incoming cross is most likely to be aimed.

You've got to block that ball across goal and hope that the midfielder or, in this case Lacroix, tracks the late run into the box.

After conferring with Google, I think the best description of him is a ‘Soy Boy’

Will not, for the love of god, put his body on the line, backs out of anything less than an 80/20, postures and points instead of actually doing. It’s as though he’s acting at being a Centre Back as opposed to actually being a Centre Back.

He’s the biggest disappointment of this season so far facored against expectation

Wasted defending the channels. Same as when Poch (?) had him playing LB.

Everything you are describing is what he’s done previously

 
Definitely way off form, but he needs more time and consistent partners. Every game is a different cast of characters, and think they're all suffering from that. And yes, he is playing well below what he is capable of as well.

 
Obviously not playing well. And hasn't been for a while. But he is only 23. He isn't the finished article by a long way, and people who know defending realise that. He has the talent, he will improve. But, like the rest of our defenders, he needs the right setup. Every week. The same structure, the same partners. It's crucial to building that understanding and awareness that makes a solid defensive unit.

 
What he needs, as well as the rest of the defenders, is to be stronger, more aggressive, and learn how to bully opponents. Our backline is too soft.

Agreed RMH. But give them all a chance. Put them in a regular formation, that they understand and become settled with, alongside the same partners, they become comfortable with, I think that will follow.

 
It shouldn't be an unbridgeable chasm to play at left centre back in a three vs left centre back in a two ... and by the way Colwill has looked poor in both of those roles.

As someone who played as a LB through academy football and later transitioned to CB on Saturdays I can confirm it’s massively different. Complete different physical profiles to compete in the channels rather than in the middle of the pitch with an outlet either side.

Some like Reece James would flourish there in a back 3, as did Azpi. It’s also why Acheampong has looked poor in a two but looks a revelation in a 3.
