Even less chance on harder Australian pitches with both bounce and movement. Driving on the up outside off is suicide. Hullo Mr Crawley. That said, it's a far from great Australian side, they have risked putting off generational change. Archer, if he stays fit, will do damage. OTOH, if Hazelwood and Cummins ever get fit they will do even more damage.
But who replaces him?
Popular opinion has it that Crawley is untouchable because his dad plays golf with Rob Key. Truth is that he makes big scores just often enough to keep him in the team. Problem is, his technique - unable to resist driving on the up outside off - can work on slower England pitches. Harder Oz pitches with bounce are altogether different.
I hear that a lot but I'm not convinced it's actually true. So many players with a similar propensity have excelled in Australia - Sehwag, Jayasuriya, Lara and of course Virat Kohli (bar the last series). David Warner also faced similar questions early in his career because he wasn't a 6' 3" mountain like Matthew Hayden. It is a high risk strategy but brings great reward because almost all the grounds in Aus have long square boundaries and short long ones. I have also heard many of the complete opposite comments over the years, that hard Australian pitches offer flat, consistent bounce, and realistically most of the pitches don't offer much for seam bowling outside the first two days.
