scariest ground

bluebeard if you had got in what end would you have gone in ? And did you hang outside the ground for an hour and a half and where?
We were planning to go in the Paxton, but the gates were shut early. As I said, there were loads of us outside, and we just walked about or stood about, waiting for the game to end so we could get at the Spurs fans. No all day boozers in those days, unfortunately, but plenty of off-licences so we managed to have a drink or two. The police marched us up to Seven Sisters at one point, to try and get us to leave the area, but we weren't having that and went back nearer to the ground. It was all worth it in the end.

thats the end we were in, and that was where all there boys were. there were about 50 in the park lane and were at it from start to finish. Same tactic a year later at Arsenal, get in late

From what I can remember quite a few grounds could be scary back in the day (80's and 90's for me) if you were on your own or in a small group. There were several places that had reputations for picking on stray fans. Notably both Liverpool clubs. I have to say though I rarely felt too scared going most places with Chelsea as we usually had good numbers. Notable exceptions include Millwall (already well covered here), Cardiff, and Leeds. I actually went to quite a lot of Leeds games over the years as I had some mates who were fans. Always found the place quite edgy. I know a few on here had bad experiences as Spuds but I never had an issue going there. In fact quite the opposite as I was lucky enough to witness some of our more memorable visits to White Hart Lane. One of my favourites being a 3-0 win there in a League Cup replay in 1991 (goals from Townsend, Dixon, and I think Wise). I remember our support was fantastic that night and there were pockets of chelsea all over the shelf. Walking back to Seven Sisters that night felt like being in Fulham Broadway with all our fans larging it.

yes spurs was easier in the 80s and 90s. I also remember a game at Birmingham in 75, we went on the special from Euston, there were not many on it and the bulk of what Chelsea were there got run on the pitch. In one of the papers the next day it was "the shed renegades invaded the pitch"

Run onto the pitch three times in three years ! How things changed after Millwall.

sorry Peckham i know we got run on the pitch in 75 at spurs, what was the other one ? And just to add insult to injury, Spurs were at Euston that day as they were playing Stoke and they had loads and they were in every boozer including the one in the station

i remember earlier clash at whl, around '68 - chels in the PLE and scrapping the whole match - Eccles leading the way with his 'fight for chelsea' shouts - 60+ fans thrown out but some returned - remember a ginger lad in celtic shirt got thrown out twice, and loads of 'tools' confiscated, including a buthcers meat clever - made the sundays

sounds great, but I am glad I had my brown trousers on!

Millwall. Quite of few of those in the CBL got out across the pitch to 'escape' into the Ilderton. Millwall followed and there were plenty of them already waiting. didn't stand a chance really.

manc definitely 70's & 80s

derby................70's

wolves late 70's

liverpool..................always scary

leeds

oddly though, far as I know, only place where a chels fan was actually killed was camb u away and that was least scarey ground! (although fan not killed at the ground)
Cambridge Utd ! I remember coming out of their ground in the early 80's after a 1-0 defeat in the old Division Two. Turn left from the away end, walk through a park with Police escort, and then all converge at a choke point to go under a railway bridge - cue Utd morons to throw bottles and bricks OVER the bridge to rain down on us. That was scary - but the ground was pants. But then we lost .......... :shok:

Cambridge, was that not the game in 83 where one of their geysers got a lot of bird and was all over the papers. Did we not win 1-0 ? Or am i thinking about the game we won when pop robson scored

Are you sure? I can remember walking from one end of the town to the other in search of a boozer that hadn't locked it's doors for the day, and not seeing a hint of trouble anywhere.

i did not see any trouble either but i think the scarfers got attacked. Getting a ticket there was a nightmare

yes Hutch, I'm sure mate. Just shows what they were like doesn't it ? I'll always remember a Chelsea fan being led down the side of the pitch by the old bill after being turfed out of the home end. With ripped coat and shirt he started zigger zagger like he didn't have a care in the world !

I went to Germany in '83 so it must have been earlier. '82 perhaps. We def got beat - real sh*t day

I was at that game, we had a good mob that day and Cambridge stayed well clear of us. But apparently they attacked a load of scarfers, it was in all the papers - didn't their leader call himself 'The General'?

Probably the papers gave him that title due to his meticulous planning of the attack. His name was Mulraney or something like that. I'd been there a couple of times before and we always took thousands but to be fair to Cambridge I think they suprised a lot of us by having a go, certainly in their end. My memory of the place is the stink of the alloments and small river behind the away end and a bombardment of cabbages and lettuces coming over the wall.

I remember seeing a press cutting of that incident somewhere on the web a while back. A Chelsea fan (who by the look of things was not a troublemaker) was seriously hurt in the attack and required 100's of stitches. I think his name was David Ayling. I had previously assumed he was just unlucky enough to be caught up in the middle of the incident. But based on some of the accounts on this thread it sounds like the Cambridge crew set on our scarfers on this occasion.

While talking about opposing team grounds with a bit of a reputation any thoughts on Bristol City? I went to a few of their games in the late 80's and they had a pretty lively bunch. One game I went to at Bolton was absolute mayhem. I think our last visit to their place was a disastrous defeat in the FA Cup in the late 80's.
