Should the World Cup be moved?

They really have screwed it all up from here, South Africa I think was the pinnacle, can't get better than that, and even despite Spain winning it I think it was a superb tournament held in the best of places, Brazil is obviously on of the main nations in the World cup since it's start and it will without doubt be a fantastic world cup, but after that it's going to straight down the drain.

Can't wait what they have in store for 2026 - a match in every country perhaps?
Agree with you on SA, it was a great tournament in terms of organisation and fan engagement. I think Germany 2006 was the peak; fantastic tournament, well run and a lot of local hype (it was great being there for a week during the World Cup).

I would honestly rather the World Cup was in Ghana than Qatar. Qatar is not a footballing country, there will be no local hype and the whole thing will be flat.

For 2026 a footballing/sporting hub has to be chosen: USA, Australia, Argentina, Most of Europe even West Africa. There will need to be a buzz after the disaster that will be 2022.

Oh I know the perfect place to hold the 2022 World Cup instead of Qatar that won't require a crapload of construction, won't have issues with drinking and revelry, and no worries about it cutting into regular seasons.

ENGLAND!

I think 2026 must be Europe, Brazil gets south america out of the way, can't imagine an african country ready to host it anytime soon and Qatar will get asia out of the way,

Australia, USA or somewhere in Europe it must be.

This is beyond belief:

Qatar World Cup: 185 Nepalese died in 2013 – official recordsDeath toll in 2013 likely to rise as new cases revealed, sparking fresh wave of concern over treatment of migrant workers

"Fifa and the government of Qatar promised the world that they would take action to ensure the safety of workers building the stadiums and infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup. This horrendous roll call of the dead gives the lie to those reassurances," said the PNCC. "These were young or otherwise able-bodied men, with their futures in front of them, families at home and everything to live for. Many have been literally worked to death. Some have met with even more sinister ends. All have been betrayed by Fifa."

The Guardian investigation last year revealed that at least 44 Nepalese workers had died in Qatar between 4 June and 8 August, more than half of them of heart attacks, heart failure or workplace accidents. But the full list of deaths recorded during the year, collated by the Nepalese NGO from official sources and documents in Doha and seen by the Guardian, shows that the actual figure is much higher.

In June, July and August alone 65 deaths were recorded by the PNCC during summer months when temperatures can regularly top 40C. The causes included traffic accidents, blunt injuries and fractures ascribed to falls and suicide. But more than 65 of the deaths in 2013 are ascribed to "sudden cardiac arrests" and more than half to some kind of heart failure. Campaigners believe the cause of death is often officially listed as a cardiac arrest because it covers a "multitude of sins".

Australia's chance is gone...we needed 22. Qatar is a member of the Asian confederation, so are we...Asia won't get the tournament again for 20 years at least after 2022...and by that time, it'll probably end up in China or something.

Australia's big chance was lost to a team that relies on naturalising foreign players (mostly South American) in their league system, but still can't qualify for the cup in a weak region.

Let's award the biggest football tournament on earth to a country where building the stadia will cause deaths by the hundred because the working conditions are life-threatening. Oh, and where playing football will also be life-threatening.

Yes, that's sensible.

I'm just happy the aussies don't have it. If we didn't get 2018, they have no right getting the 2022.

It's exactly were it should have gone.. Australia had the best package by far.. no I'm not Australian.. but I'm also not 12 years old..

Deary me

Pretty soon!

I have high hopes for this tournament after the dire 2010 World Cup.

The best thing that can happen is Spain go out early. They really sucked the life of the last World Cup and Euro to be fair.

I don't mind watching a negative team like Italy , because you get the impression they would give their lives to win. Spain don't do that bad instead suck the tempo right out of the game.

Blatter admits it was a mistake to award WC to Qatar in '22 as it's too hot in summer. You have one decision to make every 4 years! HELP!!
Blatter 'everyone makes mistakes.' Pretty big one. He's the man in charge. I imagine his resignation letter is being composed as we tweet!!!
Imagine the shock at FIFA HQ when, 2 years after the vote, someone spotted that Qatar's a tad warm in summer.
If we didn't know better we could be forgiven for thinking there were ulterior motives to awarding Qatar the WC. Wads of 'em!
Apart from being an utter spud, Gary Lineker is a rather wise old man, enjoy reading his tweets and these are a collection of his latest. Spot On!

Australia and the US were the two countries which missed out on the 2022 World Cup because the crooks (sorry, FIFA) gave the tournament to Qatar. I'm sure that either country could host the tournament. Have the stadia, transport infrastruture and a greater love of sport - not just football.

You know Qatar is a bad idea when people aren't even worried about Russia hosting it 4 years before.

I currently live in Australia and I think the country is definitely ready for a World Cup. We have all the infrastructure in place from the Olympics and 5-6 cities with 40-50 thousand plus capacity stadiums, not to mention the Melbourne Cricket Ground that seats 100,000 people that would be ideal for a final, and that sold out for Liverpool's pre-season fixture against the "A-League XI", so there is certainly plenty of interest.

It's the fastest growing sport over here and the quality of the league has increased dramatically in recent years with the likes of Del Piero, Fowler, Heskey, Kewell, Gallas and Ono plying their trade over here, it's quite ridiculous that it got awarded to Qatar over Australia (or the U.S or somewhere like China for that matter).

Giving the World Cup to Qatar just f**king reeks of corruption.

Australia should have had it and still should have it. Blatter needs to resign for this f**k up and there needs to be a re-vote on the destination of the tournament.

Illegal to drink alcohol.

Women required to cover-up.

55+ heat.

Hundreds of slave labor workers dying to build stadiums for a sport the country doesn't even f**king have a league for.

Absolutely f**king stupid, cash has changed hands to get this to happen. If it's not moved and FIFA instead changes the time of the year it's on I would like to see teams boycott the tournament by not showing up.

I think anyone in FIFA who voted for Qatar should have to run in the heat of a Qatar summer day at noon for at least 10 kilometers and at the end anyone who survives and is not in the hospital does a revote knowing they will have to do the same thing again in which ever country they vote for.  I suspect Qatar would go from winning it to not getting a single vote......that or justa  revote based on the actual merits of the country and not how thick the envelope was when they gave it to you.

Edit: I think a boycott. wether by teams or fans, might be good for the sport in the long run,  It seems as if certain members in FIFA/UEFA think they are in power by divine right and are thus entitled to use their power to better themselves instead of the sport.  A wake up call that the true power in sports lay in the fans as a mass, and not the entitled few. I think many fans have forgotten that themselves.  WC might be worth billions, but only because of the fans.  Every source of revenue in football end of the day is due to fans.  Even if its a TV deal or a sponsor deal, it only happened because the businesses wants to reach those fans.

I thought a country had to have a league in order to be able to host the World Cup?  That's why the MLS came about, so USA could host the WC in 1994.
