Now, I wish we could have a return to standing at matches for those who want to,I think the atmosphere would improve by 300%!.

However to be fair,what do you remember of the 'bad side' of standing at games?.

I remember once going arse over tip, tripping up on a dodgy bit of concrete on the Shed while looking at a stunning young brunette,then trying to pretend I meant to do it so not to look like a total twat..............I failed miserably.

But hey,that was just me being as blind as a bat, but........................

How many times did you get burger/tomato sauce down the back of you're shoulder from the bloke eating behind?.

Did you ever have the 'joy' of being pushed forward in a big crowd so the fella behind could take a p*ss?.

And lastly,a big crowd always brought out the nonce cases, & if you were young & on your own, did you ever get your arse groped!.

Doubt if you'll hear any of those memories on Espn classic!.

 
Even @ 13yo, you touch my arse, i boot your face ! Did you ever hear of any nonce being turned upon ?

Easier said than done when you're packed in like sardines mate,that's how these souless c**ts would operate,soon as you turned round to whack em, they had vanished into the crowd.

I'd never heard of any nonce getting a smack...........bloody shame really because many deserved it.

I really think you should have found a better place to stand :biggrin:

 
For me, there are no bad sides to terracing..All the things mentioned are all part n parcel of the whole experience of terracing.(not the arse stuff of course)..to stand with people you know n like..to have a great "knees up"....miss it at matches terribly..

 
Oh Brimstone, don't get me wrong I'd have those days back in a flash!

The shame is the younger generation will never know what it was like to knock a coppers helmet of while singing "Knees up mother brown"

They'll never know what it feels like to go absolutely f**king mental after we've scored and end up about 50 feet from where you started!

Or to turn round as a whole Shed and abuse the old bill on the platform!

The movement of the crowd when it surged/swayed was amazing

My old man always insisted we stood in front of a terracing barrier or near a stairwell.

He'd been in many a 100,000 plus crowd at Ibrox, Hampden, Wembley and a few big crowd sat The Bridge.

 
Having my boots taken off me along with hundreds of others and walking on the terraces in socks in freezing conditions,Bristol city away springs to mind,still mine were only monkey boots got a pair of dm;s as a swap.

Not paying in until I was about 11 or 12. Getting 'lifted over' the turnstiles.

The carry outs of alcohol openly carried in and drunk in grounds in Scotland till 1980.

Got a bit crushed going in to the shed v Sheff Wed in 84, old man just got me in the turnstyles as the crush started we could feel the queue getting tighter & tighter, luckily he did as we were next to the wall going in the members gate.

Then we got properly crushed v City in the fm cup final in 85, right at the top of the terrace against a barrier, we had to go in the seats at half time as my oldman was struggling on the terrace.

The other time was at WBA in 89, we came out & there was a big surge down this hill i was heading straight for a wall at the bottom until a lad from my street dragged me out quite a few lads got caught against that wall that day, if it'd fallen i'm sure there'd have been serious injuries or deaths.

Used to love the surging though at games, f**k me we'd surge if we won a corner

Trying to see or work out half time scores in eth programme when the matches and scores were at ground level.

This isn't 1976 Cup Final, think its 1973 Rangers v Celtic with 122,000 inside Hampden.

Yes 122,000 watched that match. My old man was one of them. I wasn't as too young.

I mean exactly that.

The Hampden capacity was 134,000 !¬

That game is the last club game.Possibly the last ever game with 100,000 spectators or over.

I'm not sure about Scotland v Czechs in 1973 and Scotland v England in 1974 in Scotland where 100,000 spectators attended.

However in 1975 101,000 spectators attended the Scotland v Wales 5 Nations International at Murrayfield !

 
Made a mistake by standing with a barrier in front of me. Crowd surge followed by panic as I was crushed against a scaffold pipe fixed between two concrete posts. Thought I was going to die. Never again. Otherwise complete fun to be had. Miss it just like the rest of you.

Thats why my old man insisted we always stood in front of a terracing barrier.

And right never down the front as bottles would often land there intended for teh pitch/opposing fans !

 
I wonder what it would be like if terracing did make a return with today's health & safety mentality?.

I guess, (& I mean no disrespect),someone,somewhere would complain about wheelchair access.

I can't help but think a modern incarnation of standing at football matches would be a freakishly controlled enviroment,homogenised for public consumption,safe for all,where any behaviour considerd 'risky',would bring the full force of the matchday stewards/bellends down onto the poor soul.

In other words, a complete cop-out to what it once was and a total waste of time & it will probably be just as expensive!.

It's a bloody shame really,if the powers that-be show a bit of wisdom, it could work & give the modern game a much needed & overdue boost.
