Terracing, the bad side

I wonder what it would be like if terracing did make a return with today's health & safety mentality?.

I guess, (& I mean no disrespect),someone, somewhere would complain about wheelchair access.

I can't help but think a modern incarnation of standing at football matches would be a freakishly controlled enviroment, homogenised for public consumption, safe for all, where any behaviour considerd 'risky',would bring the full force of the matchday stewards/bellends down onto the poor soul.

In other words, a complete cop-out to what it once was and a total waste of time & it will probably be just as expensive!.

It's a bloody shame really,if the powers that-be show a bit of wisdom, it could work & give the modern game a much needed & overdue boost.
Many of today wouldn't be able to cope with the terracing culture.

In nearly every game the fans now stand either home fans or away fans.

When a fan gets pushed over and hurts him/herself on a seat and then sues the club who knows maybe they will change.

At the same time I think they will re-introduce when they realise they can get more in and make more match day money as a result.

Itwould be too sanitised..No knees ups for sure...Reminds me. I saw the old SO BAR opened , as it is in its current form, and went to enter it v spuds..I was immediately told b4 entering.." no singing allowed"..Sanitised to f**k...

I think that when we move stadiums, their should definately be a push for a standing section!

If its good enough in Germany, its good enough in England!

a PUSH for a standing section??? Oh the IRONY!

If you call me young, I will amuse myself all day long, Sheddie! :blush2:

Made a mistake by standing with a barrier in front of me. Crowd surge followed by panic as I was crushed against a scaffold pipe fixed between two concrete posts. Thought I was going to die. Never again. Otherwise complete fun to be had. Miss it just like the rest of you.
At the 1976 Scottish Cup Final a crowd surge at the gates broke down an exit gate and its estaimated that nearly 2.000 fans got in free and were not on the official crowd.

The burger and sauce down the jacket was always a pain , especially if onions were involved. That and the customary bits of half chewed food that were shot out of the fellas mouth behind you when a bad decision happened ( or Rodney giving away another peno , or Lurch getting chipped again).

The crush against the barrier I got caught in once and never again , I'm not the biggest and it frightened the life out of me , to have no control over what was happening. Never stood near the barriers again , if it was a big crowd I often went into the West Stand rather than risk it and I never liked being down the front of the Shed because the view was rubbish.

The atmosphere was something else though , when plod started going in for someone that tune started I think its a disney tune ?

It was even funnier when the old bill came in to get some poor sod and the good old knees up mother brown started.Policemen getting bounced about everywhere and the odd stray helmet.

The terrace crush was not really taken seriously, I am amazed that there were no regular fatalities.

When the "on the pitch and we want a riot" chorus used to go up lots received injuries, one that springs to mind was at QPR when we packed out the loft circa 1972, the walls collapsed and remember a young girl at the front with twisted presumed broken leg.

On reflection some of the crushes at stations were just as bad, Charlton away when the fires were lit on valley terraces was particularly rib breaking and lung crushing amongst others.

No singing? Jesus. I've been there once since it changed, was wondering why no one was singing, especially on a big European night.

The price of a pint of Red Stripe was bad enough.

Two people squeezing into a turnstile and the operator getting some cash at an All Ticket Game.

Terracing was great as a kid. Best / worst crush was Spuds league cup semi in the shed, took ne 20 minutes to get me cigs out of me pocket at half time. Grimsby away when we went up was a sell out all ticket and they let you in pay on the day as well - madness !
